Alumni weekend golf tournament to benefit sons of Oxford grad
OXFORD – As members of Oxford’s Class of 1991 gather this weekend for their 20th class reunion, there will be one classmate who will be there, not in person, but in spirit.
John Lobdell, a 1991 graduate of Oxford, passed away three years ago after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. His memory lives on, however, in the hearts of his family, friends and classmates – many of whom will participate in a golf outing Saturday.
Proceeds from the event, the third annual Brody/Mason Fund Golf Tournament, will benefit a scholarship fund created in Lobdell’s memory for his two sons, Brody and Mason.
Ensuring that the two boys are able to attend college in accordance with their father’s wishes has become something of a mission for two of Lobdell’s longtime friends, Tim O’Brien and Nathaniel Emerson. Over the last two years they, with the help of another classmate, Matt Mayhew, have succeeded in raising over $20,000 for the cause.
“All money gained from tournaments goes directly into a private interest bearing account designed specifically for the boys’ college funds,” explained Emerson.
The third annual captain and crew tournament will take place Saturday at Blue Stone Golf Course in Oxford. Registration opens at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost to participate is $55 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf and cart rental. On-course beverages will be provided to participants free of charge, courtesy of Ridge Trucking and Logistics.
According to the organizers, a number of generous sponsors have already signed on to support the event. That includes three Marquee Sponsors - Zillacom, a telecommunications company owned in part by another Oxford grad, Communication Components Inc. and CommScope - all of which were secured by O’Brien from his contacts in the telecommunications industry. Many area businesses are also supporting the event through sponsorships and prize donations, including Bartle’s Pharmacy, NBT, Lee & Emerson, The Stadium, Roma, Hoppies, Blueox and AIM Fitness.
“These businesses have been faithful for three years now,” said Emerson.
He and O’Brien have been so touched by the support they’ve received for the scholarship fund, that they have taken to making personal donations to other causes in the name of The Brody Mason Fund.
“We do all we can to support other fundraising events in the area. ... It's one way that we can give back to the tremendous support we get from our community,” Emerson said, stressing that the donations are made out of their own pockets, not the scholarship fund.
