Postcards, pictures and pottery – Sherburne celebrates its history

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Historic Park Society held its Annual Heritage Day program Saturday and it was well attended. The central theme this year was “Postcards, Pictures and Pottery.”
The Log Cabin at 11 School Street was filled with people most of the day, who were enjoying the display boards of “Postcards and Pictures.” There were eight of these, each depicting a specific area of the businesses of Sherburne about the turn of the century.
Book Two of the “Bullthistle Series” was signed by Town Historian, Rose Wellman. This new book contains many of the pictures and text shown on the displays and is available for $20 at the Sherburne Public Library and also at the Historic Park Society Log Cabin. Call 674-6312 for more information.
The Sherburne Public Library celebrates its centennial this year and a living history skit was given by the Sherburne Music Theater Society. This skit featured the Pratt and Newton family and the origins of the Public Library.
A display of Hart’s Pottery was arranged upstairs in the Log Cabin, with each one identified by its markings. Our Society President, Lee Perrin, told of the history of the Hart’s Pottery which was here in Sherburne Circa 1840s.
A queen-size, patriotic theme quilt was donated by Catherine Jenne for a fund raiser raffle and it was won by Jo Hodges of Sherburne.
The Relay For Life group donated a tree and a plaque for the area by the back porch – watch for a follow up story on that later this week.
Several other displays, demonstrations, music and talks rounded out a wonderful day for all.
