Reports of helicopter crash unsubstantiated

NORWICH – Chenango County’s dispatchers received calls about a possible helicopter crash in the Town of Norwich Tuesday evening, but when crews arrived, the aircraft took off with no apparent problems.
The initial 911 call came at 6:42 p.m. and was placed by a property owner in the vicinity of Manley Road, reported Chief Dispatcher A. Wesley Jones. According to the caller, a helicopter had been seen hovering and appeared in distress.
“When they actually called, it was on the ground,” Jones said, on private property approximately 200 yards off Manley Road, between a pond and a wooded area.
When the Norwich Fire Department responded, however, they saw no evidence of a crash. Jones, who was also on the scene, said they could not see the craft, but moments later they heard it take off. They were only able to catch a glimpse of it through the trees as it departed to the south.
“The helicopter was seen approximately 10 minutes later in the Oxford area. It didn’t appear in distress,” he said.
According to Jones, witnesses gave varying descriptions of the helicopter.
“No one was able to get a tail number,” he said, which would have helped identify the aircraft.
While witnesses surmised it was a New York State Police helicopter, Jones said, “We don’t believe that to be the case.”
