Pigskin Classic begins tonight
NORTH NORWICH – More than 90 players on eight teams in junior high and high school divisions will take the field at Galena Park in North Norwich for this weekend’s inaugural Chenango County Pigskin Classic.
Players from Norwich, Sherburne, New Berlin, Oxford, Edmeston, Morrisville, and Windsor are signed up to play, said tournament organizer, Steve Franklin. The initial goal was to max out at 20 teams, however; two teams dropped out that previously made verbal commitments. Additionally, Franklin believes many people are taking and “wait-and-see” approach. “It’s similar to the first year of the Gus Macker (basketball) tournament when they only had about half the teams they have now,” Franklin said. “That tournament grew fast, and that’s what we’re hoping for.”
Player registration is from 3-7 p.m. on Friday night, and a football skills competition will be held from 3-8 p.m., and that is open to everyone – not just the players. Prizes will be awarded to skills competition winners. Providing music for the kickoff party is Mike’s D.J. Service, and a chicken barbecue is scheduled from 4-9 p.m., presented by the North Norwich Fire Department.
