The Chenango County Fair ... 164 years and counting

NORWICH – Celebrating its 164th anniversary, there’s only one question to ask oneself when Tuesday rolls around – what’s not to love when it comes to the Chenango County Fair?
Thousands are expected to make their way down to the fairgrounds throughout the week and weekend, according to Agricultural Society President Mary Weidman, in a celebration of all things Chenango County.
The fair will feature its traditional blend of rides and games of chance – provided by the Coleman Brothers Carnival – as well as a wide variety of entertainment, exhibits, vendors and more, including a few new additions that may surprise some people. And while the gates officially open Tuesday afternoon for the New York State Sire Stakes Harness Racing event at 1 p.m., for many people, it’s the annual 4-H and Firemen’s Parade that really kicks off the fair year after year, said Weidman.
The parade will begin at 7 p.m. and feature a number of area veterans organizations, as well as various parade bands, fire departments and local motorcycle groups. The Norwich American Legion Riders will once again lead the parade, according to commander Hank Burnor, who said it’s “important to keep this going as a tradition and show support for our veterans, and the community.”
Rides, on Tuesday, will open at 4 p.m.
“We’ve worked hard to put together a good show this year with some new attractions, as well as those that are so popular every year,” Weidman added.
Today marks fair-goers’ last chance to pick up their advance general admission tickets at a discounted price, as well, available for $4 ($5 for grandstand tickets) at the main gate and Price Chopper. The $5 grandstand ticket offer does not include Wednesday or Friday’s main event, however, reported Weidman. And thanks to NBT Bank, there is no admission to the fairgrounds on Tuesday, including the Chenango Blues Association’s final Summer Concert Series performance, featuring the New Riders of the Purple Sage. In addition, fair memberships will be available throughout the week – $15 for adults and $12 for children ages 6 to 12 – which covers the cost of general admission over the course of the fair.
Parking, as usual, is free.
“The fair memberships are really a wonderful opportunity,” said Weidman. “Not only do you get daily admission into the fair, it gives people a chance to attend fair board meetings in the future if they choose. That way, they can have some say in the Chenango County Fair if they’d like.”
Things will really get rolling on Wednesday – the fair’s official Children’s Day – when kids twelve and under are admitted free of charge. The day’s activities will include the Gillespie Chenango County Pageant, the first of two Children’s Day Bicycle Drawings and a performance by country singer Andy Griggs, presented by Millenia Entertainment.
Rides will open an noon, Wednesday through Sunday, and tickets for Griggs’ 7 p.m. grandstand performance are $20.
“People can expect a high energy show featuring his ten top 40 country hits. How can you go wrong, really? Not to mention it’s right here in our backyard,” said Millenia Entertainment owner Terry Potter. “We’re definitely excited to have a country star of Andy’s caliber performing right here in Norwich.”
Thursday’s entertainment will include the popular County Tractor Pull, according to Weidman, as well as a performance by local classic and modern rockers My New Obsession and the NYTPA’s Super Stocks and Modified Tractor Pull. Thursday is also Senior Citizen’s Day, and those age 60 and up will be admitted for free.
As for something new, Friday will feature the TNA television network’s Impact Wrestling Tour at 7:30 p.m. in the grandstands. Wrestlers such as Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, Mr. Anderson, Beer Money, Inc., D’Angelo Dinero, “The Monster” Abyss, Mickie James and more. Tickets for the event are available at www.e-tix.com, the fair’s main gate or by phone at 334-9198.
“We’re hoping it’s going to do well and tickets are still available,” said Weidman of Friday’s main event. “We wanted to offer people something a little different this year and it’s very popular on television. We know there are a lot of people locally who really enjoy professional wrestling.”
Friday is also Midnight Madness at the fair, with wristbands going for $20 between 9 and 11 p.m., good until 1 a.m.
Saturday will feature a full day of entertainment, said Weidman, including the Antique and Garden Tractor Pulls, the NYS Talent Show, the second Children’s Day Bicycle Drawing, entertainment by Magical John, Kaitlyn and John Jackson, the Elvis Show and the NYTPA Trucks and Super Farm Tractor Pull. On Sunday, the ever-popular Demolition Derby returns to the fairgrounds, with contests at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the grandstand.
Week-long shows at this year’s fair – including the Coleman Brothers Carnival – will include Equine Road, the free Entertainment Tent, the Conservation Display, Floral Hall Demonstrations and – once again – the Two by Two Petting Zoo.
