NORTH NORWICH – The 2011 Chenango County Pigskin Classic featured thrilling contests from start to finish and in the end, The Sleep Shop and Gilligan’s Island each emerged as champions of the inaugural 7-on-7 touch football tournament.
The senior division championship game came down to the wire as The Sleep Shop edged River Road Auto 19-13 on a last second touchdown.
The junior divsion title contest also proved to be no slouch as Gilligan’s Island scored three late touchdowns to break open a back and forth battle and earn the title with a 38-20 win over a scrappy Shaver Contracting squad.
“You couldn’t have scripted better games,” said tournament director Steve Franklin in referencing the two title games. “Both championship games were extremely competitive and overall, the quality of play was extremely high.
“This is something that we truly believe will take off in the future,” Franklin added. “Coach (Terry) Dowd, the head coach at Morrisville State College, brought his son down to play on one of the teams and was extremely impressed with the setup and overall concept of the tournament. Dowd couldn’t believe we didn’t attract more teams to the event. He called it ‘the best thing in our area,’ and he truly believes that this event will become huge over the next few years.”
More than 70 kids took to the field on seven different teams. Each team played at least five games throughout the weekend and all but one team came away with at least one victory.
“The teams were really competing hard. There were a lot of smiles throughout the weekend, but when the trophies went on the line, the kids were all business,” tournament director Ed Holmquist said. “This was a really great tune-up for the high school football season.”
Twenty-Seven sponsors helped put on the event, including corporate partners, North Norwich Motors, Rentals to Go, Smith Ford, Chenango Welding Supply, New York Central Mutual Insurance Company and NBT Bank.
“The community really jumped behind us,” tournament organizer Mike Marango said. “Without our sponsors and volunteers support, we couldn’t have done this. They helped us put on a successful event and thanks to their support, I have no doubt that we’ll continue to grow in the years to come. This was just the first of many.”
