Sheriff Benenati laid to rest
NORWICH – Funeral services for Joe Benenati were held on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor, celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial.
Mass began with Deborah Benenati and Ed Sidote placing the baptismal pall upon the casket. Several community leaders then spoke about Joe. Honorable Judge Howard Sullivan, Tom Loughren, retired Chenango County Sheriff, Norwich Chief of Police Joe Angelino and Harold Funke spoke of their friend and colleague. Nieces Eileen Soika and Dr. Marie Loscavio also honored Joe. The scripture readings for the Mass were proclaimed by Frank Benenati and Dr. Loscavio. Eileen Soika, Ed Sidote and Teresa Biviano presented the offertory gifts to Father Bove. The organist for the service was Mary Ward. Antoinette Perkins sang a solo and members of the St. Bartholomew’s Choir paid musical tribute. Mary Ann Bodiot was the altar server and Eucharistic Minister.
Burial followed in St. Paul’s Cemetery with Father Bove offering the committal prayers. Full military honors were accorded the World War II decorated veteran by members of the American Legion, VFW and Marine Corps League under the command of Harold Funke. Members of the New York State Troopers, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department and the Norwich City Police Department formed honor guards and casket guards during the preceding night’s calling hours. Members of the NYS Troopers Bagpipers played at both St. Bartholomew’s Church and at St. Paul’s Cemetery. The casket bearers were Lt. Rich Cobb and Deputy Dustin Smietana of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, Troopers Darrell Dening and William Franz, representing the NYS Troopers and Officer Evan Romaine and Chief Joseph Angelino, representing the Norwich City Police.
The arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home.
