Norwich chosen to host statewide 9/11 exhibit

ALBANY – Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced yesterday that 30 locations across New York State will be the sites of a new exhibition titled “New York Remembers,” organized in recognition of the upcoming 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. Included in the list of sites named is the Chenango County Council of the Arts, located on West Main Street in Norwich.
Victoria Kappel, executive director of the Council of the Arts, called the exhibit a “wonderful opportunity” for the organization. She said she was “honored and excited” that the Norwich gallery was chosen.
Details about the exhibit’s local opening and gallery hours will be forthcoming.
The exhibits will include artifacts from the site of the disaster, many of which have never been seen by the public. Fragments of the aircrafts and buildings, damaged emergency vehicles, and photographs and messages left by grieving families will all be included in the displays.
“These displays will give New Yorkers ... all across the state a gathering place to once again stand as one community to make sure we never forget those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and to embrace the spirit of unity that brought us together on that day of devastating tragedy,” said Governor Cuomo.
The exhibition is being organized by the New York State Museum, the largest repository of 9/11 artifacts, and the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum which is a not-for-profit corporation created to oversee the design, fundraising, programming and operations of the Memorial and Museum which will be located on the site of the World Trade Center.
New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John B. King Jr. said, “Every New Yorker should know what happened on 9/11. Through New York Remembers citizens ... across the state will be better able to reflect on and understand our tragic and shared history of Sept. 11, 2001.”
Other sites include SUNY Binghamton, Hartwick College in Oneonta, Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica to name just a few across the state.
The exhibit will open at the end of August and will remain open until the end of September including the Sunday of Sept. 11.
