Paul McKenna Band brings driving Scottish rhythms to EOH

EARLVILLE – Words such as “breathtaking” and “a voice that many would kill for” describe the lilting music and the driving Celtic rhythms of the Paul McKenna Band.  The Band travels from Scotland to play the historic stage of the Earlville Opera House this Saturday, Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. The Paul McKenna Band is generously sponsored by WCNY TV & Classic FM.
Fatea Magazine sums up why Celtic music lovers should not miss this band, now with two CD’s under their belt: “The Paul McKenna Band are fulfilling the prophecies that were written when they released their debut album…As you would expect with a Paul McKenna band album, it’s not just the songs, it’s the musicianship. McKenna has a voice that many would kill for, a delicate lilt that gives it something really distinctive, but by the time you add in the playing of Ruairidh McMillan, Ewan Baird, Sean Gray and David McNee you would be looking at green eyed jealousy giving way to wholesale slaughter…Whilst the likes of the Battlefield Band, Planxty and Boys Of The Lough defined Celtic music for the last third of the 20th century, it will be the likes of Bodega, Breabach and the Paul McKenna Band that will end up defining it for the first third of the 21st one.”
The band’s second CD has critics heaping on the praise: “This young Scottish band is centered around Paul McKenna, exquisite singer/songwriter with a charismatic voice. However, the band around him is what makes the CD special indeed. The music sparkles and swings, is full of life and the CD captures an energetic “live” feeling of the band… The band sound is perfect and at times breathtaking – equally in lively instrumental sets and beautiful slow ballads.” Folk World
However, the band also reaps as much admiration for its live performance: “The instrumental arrangements and playing are outstanding throughout. The guitar and bouzoukis provide a rhythmic drive, the fiddle, flute and whistles intertwine beautifully and the bodhran is shown to be an instrument capable of subtlety and innovation.  They are a band whose live stage act is both engaging and memorable…” The Living Tradition
