RSVP presents educational seminars for seniors

NORWICH – The Chenango County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will be presenting five educational seminars for anyone over the age of 60 during the coming months. These programs will be held throughout the county thanks to a grant from the Norwich Youth Philanthropy Council. Each educational session will contain three topics of interest to the senior population and will be presented by professionals in that field.
The first of the five-part series will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in Sherburne at the Grace Manor Apartment Complex Community Center, Knapp Street. Doors will open at 12:30 with the first presentation “Financial Issues Particular to Seniors” starting at 1. Examples include wills, reverse mortgages, and more. The presenter for this important topic will be Crystal DeMarco, Senior Associate with First Investors. From 2 to 4 Dorothy Gardner, United Health Service Stay Healthy Senior Coordinator, will be presenting both the second and third topic of the day which are “Steps to Staying Healthy” and “Safety on the Road” including driving tips and ease of driving as we age.
In October the second of this educational series will be held in Bainbridge at the Town Hall, 15 North Main Street on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The first topic of the day will be presented from 9 to 9:45. “Nutrition: Its Importance to Staying Healthy,” guidelines for healthy eating, will be presented by Gayle Breuilley, Registered Dietitian, Clinic Nutrition Manager at Chenango Memorial Hospital. From 9:45 to 10:30, the second topic will be “Tips for Reducing Stress” including dealing with grief and loss. This presentation will be given by Dorothy Gardner, United Health Services Stay Healthy Senior Coordinator. Finishing up the morning from 10:30 to noon, will be Ken Austin, a Health Insurance Counselor volunteer with Chenango County Area Agency on Aging, with an update and in-depth presentation, “Medicare 101.”
Oct. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to noon will round out the fall presentations, in Greene at the Moore Memorial Library, 59 Genesee Street. From 9 to 10 a.m., Rene Conklin, Coordinator of Elder Services Center, Decker School of Nursing, Binghamton University will clear up the confusion with “Normal Aging or Dementia?Signs and Symptoms.” From 10 to 11, “Aging Gracefully with Humor; The Importance of Laughter” will be presented by Judie Wright of Consulting wRight. The morning will conclude from 11 to noon with a presentation from Sandra Brocious, Director of Public Computer Center at Moore Memorial Library, “Health Resources on the Internet,” using the internet for health research. The library computers will be available for use in this workshop.
Additional programs will be held in Norwich and New Berlin early in 2012. Further information on these programs will be forthcoming.
These seminars are open to all seniors throughout the county. Everyone is encouraged to attend as many of these programs that are of interest to you. All of the presentations are offered at no cost to those attending; light refreshments will be available and door prizes awarded. Registration for each class is required and may be made by calling the RSVP office at 336-6414 ext. 103 at least one week prior to the date of the presentation.
