Depth key to NHS swimmers’ win
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Norwich 101, Chenango Forks 84
CHENANGO FORKS – The extra numbers and depth paid off for Norwich, who won at Chenango Forks Friday night for the first time in head coach Amanda Downey’s tenure.
With the meet’s result still hanging in the balance, Norwich finished one-two in the closing 400-meter freestyle relay to capture 12 of 14 possible team points. “I really didn’t know what (Chenango Forks) had left going to the last event, and I knew they still had some strong swimmers left,” Downey said. “Anything could have happened in the last event, I just wanted (my team) to finish strong.”
In addition to winning the last relay, Norwich’s Rachel Zieno (200 freestyle), Erin Gawronski (500 freestyle), and Shannon Curley (100 breaststroke) captured victories. Norwich was especially dominant in the longer freestyle races, Downey said. “It definitely helped having the depth, it made a huge difference in this meet,” Downey said. “It was a big win, and the girls swam really well for their first meet of the season.”
Norwich is at Chenango Valley Friday.

SHERBURNE – in the finals of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament, Remsen, a Section III, Class D finalist last year, was able to outclass the undermanned Marauders.
Jolene Marfone and Brittany Waterbury had first-half goals for Remsen, who held just a slight edge (15-13) in shots on goal. The Marauders, coming off a shutout win the day before, had just two substitutes available for the game. “I was surprised at how close the shots were because (Remsen) was the better team,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis. “The girls really played hard to the end, they just ran out of steam.”
In Friday’s first-round game, Sherburne-Earlville built a 2-0 halftime lead over local rival Hamilton en route to an opening victory.
Briana Vibbard scored 27 minutes into the half, and new starter, Sarah Cole, scored her first varsity goal a little while later. Emma Karaman added an insurance tally after a picture-perfect cornerkick from Jordan Van Althuis.
“We got off to a slow start Friday,” Davis said. “We just had to make some position adjusments.”
Gizem Kocak led the S-E defense, and S-E keeper Sierra Morris finished with six saves. Morris, Cole, and Emily Palmer were all named to the all-tournament team.
S-E plays at Hamilton Thursday at 7 p.m.
