Oxford Youth Sports Program golf tournament Saturday
OXFORD – The Oxford Youth Sports Program will host its first fundraising golf tournament Saturday to raise money for the not-for-profit group, which offers soccer, t-ball and basketball programs for children ages 5 to 12.
“We use the money we raise to offset the costs of sports that the children and their families that play,” explained OYSP President Tim O’Brien, who said the group has always tried to keep the cost to participants at or below that of other similar programs. “We wish that we could have the children play for free and hopefully in the future we can with doing fundraising such as this.”
This Saturday’s captain and crew format tournament will take place at Blue Stone Golf Course, 44 Scott St., Oxford. Registration opens at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m.
The cost to participate is $50 per golfer, which includes greens fees and cart rental.
A number of businesses and individuals have already stepped forward to sponsor the event. Those sponsors include NYCM, Fred’s Inn and Park Place Restaurants, and Oxford Motors, LLC. Additional sponsorship opportunities are still available, according to the organizer.
For more information or to register a team, contact O’Brien at (973) 452-0216. Teams can also be registered by calling Blue Stone directly at 843-8352.
O’Brien said one of the specific programs the golf tournament will support is an upcoming one-day softball camp. The camp will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Oxford High School, and will be lead by Cortland Red Dragons Head Coach Julie Lenhart and her coaching staff.
According to O’Brien, the Red Dragons finished fourth at the college World Series this past year and its coaching staff, lead by Lenhart, was named NFCA Northeast Region Staff of the Year for 2011.
“This camp is open to all of the schools in the area within the age range of 7 to the senior class of 2012,” O’Brien said. The camp will be free of charge for participants, but donations will be accepted.
