Bobcats buoyed by passing game

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford run-first offense now has a worthy complement: An effective passing game.
Not since Brendan Baldwin threw for over 1,000 yards in a season nearly 15 years ago has the B-G offense looked to throw the ball with such confidence.
Junior quarterback Corbin Palmer threw three touchdown passes Friday night against Harpursville, and running back Billy Holden had 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 41-20 victory over visiting Harpursville.
“We have a lot of confidence in our passing game, and even when (the other team) stuffs the running game for a little bit, we know we can throw the ball if we need to,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Palmer is a bright quarterback, and he has the ability to look off his primary receiver and find the secondary guy. It’s something we haven’t had here before.”
Harpursville’s defense was on the stout side early in the game, that is, until Palmer went to work. With the Bobcats already leading 8-0 thanks to a Holden 45-yard interception return, Palmer set up his team’s second TD with a savvy throw befitting someone playing on the next level. Palmer looked off Ryan Porter on the left side, and fired a first-down strike to Corey Burnett for 19 yards to the Harpursville five. Holden scored the first of his two scores on the next play.
Harpursville was coming off an impressive win in week one, but found itself in a four-touchdown hole at halftime. Palmer went long to Porter early in the second quarter hitting his senior wideout in stride for a 53-yard score. Late in the half, Holden broke free for a 43-yard gainer to the Hornets’ four. Two plays later – and with a five-yard false-start penalty moving the host offense back, Palmer found a wide-open Austin Bauerle on a seven-yard scoring strike. The 27-0 halftime lead was not expected by Mattingly, but definitely welcomed. “Yeah, it wasn’t expected, but I’d rather be up 27-nothing than have it a close game,” Mattingly said.
A 15-yard penalty aided Harpursville’s first scoring driving of the game, a 47-yard trip through the B-G defense that was done exclusively on the ground. Steven Lee’s four-yard run on fourth down put the Hornets on the board early in the third.
Following a B-G turnover, Harpursville struck quickly again. Mason Dean’s option pass to Eric Storrs covered 44 yards, and settled the visitors at the B-G two. Dean scored on the next play paring the margin to 27-14.
The momentum of the game had shifted, and B-G’s fortunes seemed to sour some more when the offense went nowhere, and was forced to punt. Bauerle’s boot only covered 25 yards, but on the ball’s descent, it hit Storrs – who was blocking and had his back turned – on the shoulder pads. Tyler Ouimet recovered at the Harpursville 31 to give B-G excellent field position.
Holden ran for 14 yards and first down, but the drive was about to stall with the Bobcats stuck at fourth-and-goal at the 10. Mattingly called on Palmer once more, and Palmer delivered his third TD pass, again to Bauerle.
With Harpursville’s momentum now in stall mode, Holden forced a fumble of H’ville’s Isaac Gatto stripping the ballcarrier. Porter fell on the loose ball, and B-G’s offense was back in business.
Two plays after the turnover, Holden raced up the middle untouched for the 35-yard score. “Honestly, Harpursville really took it to us in the third quarter,” Mattingly said. “I’m always worried (about a letdown) when you have a big lead at halftime. We were able to respond with a couple of scores, which we needed.”
B-G is at Deposit-Hancock this weekend.
