NORWICH – After trading goals with Norwich early in the second half, Chenango Valley’s Ashley Lawrence knocked in the game-winner with 28:07 left in the game to give the Warriors a win over the Tornado Friday.
Norwich put a season-high 15 shots on goal, and held a significant edge in total shots. The lone NHS goal game from Alyssa MacIntosh, who scored off a Kayla Hughes pass. “We had so much good passing up front, and it really looked nice,” said Norwich coach Dianne Fiorina. “We played really well, we just couldn’t put another goal in.”
Saturday, G-MU scored three unanswered goals in the second half to break away from a tie game in defeating the Tornado. Kali Murphy had two goals for G-MU in the win.
MacIntosh was credited with an unassisted first-half goal for Norwich, who host Chenango Forks today at 4:30 p.m.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU won its first game of the season Friday night scoring once in each overtime period to turn back Franklin.
Cousins Lauren Hill and Miranda Hill provided all of the scoring offense for G-MU during regulation. Lauren Hill had four goals, while Miranda Hill added one goal and three assists.
Franklin scored three times in the second half to erase G-MU’s big lead and force extra minutes. Kerisha Puerile scored in the first OT for the Raiders (2-2-1), and Jenn Mason tacked on the insurance goal. Most important, G-MU’s defense held Franklin scoreless the final 20 minutes. “We were missing a few key people for the game, and it made it difficult for a while,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “I didn’t really say anything (to the team) in overtime. It was the captains who stepped up and told the team we had 20 minutes, and to play our game.”
G-MU visits Cherry Valley-Springfield on Tuesday.

UV led 2-1 at the break led by two goals from Taylor Davis. Megan Smith expanded the lead at 16:30 before the Spartans netted shots with 8:05 and 6:11 remaining in regulation. Talbot’s penalty kick was awarded after a collision in the penalty box.

Erin Gawronski had four total wins for the Tornado swimmers taking the 200 individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, while also teaming up on a pair of winning relays. First-year freshman, Morgan Hagenbuch, won the diving competition scoring 116.2; Kerstin Franklin won the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.30), and Rachel Zieno was a double winner taking the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.33) along with the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.80).
Norwich expanded its margin of victory sweeping all three relays and nine events overall.

Grace Dunshee scored both of the Marauders’ goals – one in each half. She scored unassisted midway through the first half, and picked up an assist from Michelle Mackey with 19:09 left in the second session.
Katherine Robertson made three saves for S-E, who outshot Canastota, 8-3. “This is a huge win for us,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “We all played very well. We had good passing, good offensive pressure, and we were good in transition from defense to offense.”

Today our hard work paid off. We served well under pressure with only six missed serves for the day.”

VERONA – At the V-V-S Invitational, site of this year’s cross country state championships, Sherburne-Earlville and Norwich gained valuable experience in facing some of the best cross country runners in the state.
The Tornado’s Jamie Zieno led the Tornado boys in the Varsity Two race. Zieno was 71st overall out of 242 runners timing 19:05. Sarah Spittler, a senior for Norwich, paced the Tornado girls running 41st out of 138 runners in a time of 22:28.
In the varsity one race, S-E’s Ian Benedict (86th, 20:08) and Erin Mahardy (111th, 27:30) led their teams. The varsity one race had 156 girls and 230 boys.
“This was a huge meet, and gave our kids an opportunity to run with a big pack,” said S-E coach Anne Geary.
The Marauders are at West Canada Valley on Wednesday.
