Coventry to host special Civil War recognition event

COVENTRY – The Chenango County Civil War Commemorative Society will hold a kick-off event for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War on Oct. 9 at the Coventry Congregational Church.
The event is actually in conjunction with the Coventry Town Museum association’s annual Civil War recognition and will last from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, Coventry will be honoring Henry Andrews, from the NYS 114th regiment.
Last year, 130 of Andrews’ letters were given to Greene Historian Nancy Bromley by James Blakeslee, a descendant of Andrews.
“It was so exciting to receive such an amazing treasure,” said Bromley. Blakeslee will be at the event to answer questions about his ancestor and Bromley will read excerpts from the letters.
Breakfast and lunch will be served by the town museum and there will be a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. (those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass). Following the dinner, everyone is invited to join the members of the Commemorative Society in traveling to the North Afton Cemetery, where an American flag will be placed on Andrews’ grave.
The kick-off event is just one of a series of programs the society will be sponsoring over the next five years, said Vicky House of the Oxford Historical Society. A traveling display of Civil War items, a series of articles in The Evening Sun and a post office display are just a few of the programs in the works, she said.
According to House, the idea for the Commemorative Society began when Bromley discovered the state had very little money available to commemorate the anniversary of the war between the states.
“We decided that if the state couldn’t do it, then Chenango County would at least make an effort,” she said.
The society is made up of town historians, historical societies and individually interested parties. House explained the goal of the project would be to increase awareness of the anniversary and to educate as many people as possible about the battles and hardships undertaken by the men who served.
“It’s a great time for anyone interested in history to come together,” said Bromley.
The society will also be providing a series of articles for The Evening Sun that detail numerous parts of life for people living during that time. The articles are set to begin in late October.
