Fatal fire in Norwich Saturday morning

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal residential fire that occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 24 at 308 County Road 34 in the Town of Norwich.

The Chenango County 911 Center received a 911 call at 3:30 a.m. reporting a structure fire at the above address. The residence is a single wide trailer owned by the victim, Mary DiDanato, age 55. Upon arrival of the Norwich Fire Department the east end of the residence was heavily involved in fire. The fire was under control within minutes. Fire personnel found DiDanato near the front door of the residence. The Chenango County Bureau of Fire Cause and Origin Team is assisting the Sheriff's Office in the investigation. The fire appears to have started from a smoldering cigarette, but an electrical cause has not been ruled out.

An autopsy will be performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton to determine the cause of death.
