Football Roundup: S-E creeps closer to playoff berth

Sherburne-Earlville 28, Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton 0
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville won its third straight game – all in division play – and crept a step closer to reaching the Section III playoffs for the first time with a shutout of Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton on Friday night.
The big-play running of Devven Ferris complemented the inside rushes of Cory Musician and Austin Jasper leading S-E (3-1) to a 20-0 halftime lead.
“We had some pretty horrible conditions, and based on that, we knew we would stick to the running game,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “It was nothing fancy, just blasting it up the middle. Devven is a speedster, and gave us a great counter. When he got outside, it hurt them.”
Ferris had scoring runs of 39, 40, and 53 yards, and he finished with 127 yards rushing on just six carries. That offensive production was more than enough for the Marauders, who held the M-E/H to just 44 yards of total offense.
Musician had an eight-yard TD run in the third quarter, and he finished with 71 yards rushing. Austin Jasper added 74 yards rushing on 10 carries. S-E takes a week off from division play when it plays UV-Edmeston this week. “We’re not to the point where we can look ahead to anyone,” the S-E coach said, whose team has two league games left. “One of our goals is to win every division game, and let things happen from there.”

Greene 48, Dryden 6
GREENE – Greene overcame nine fumbles – two lost – with an overwhelming level of dominance at the line of scrimmage.
The Trojans rushed for 359 yards and had a season-high 430 yards of total offense in a rout of Dryden Friday night in a non-league matchup.
The interior defensive front of Ricky Carbone, Kyle Stanton, and Trevor Flohr stuffed the Dryden attack allowing less than 20 yards of offense in the first half and just one first down.
Offensively, Keegan Cerwinski had two first-half touchdown runs, while Jeff Carlin and Mike Beckwith added TD jaunts pushing the Trojans to a 28-0 halftime lead. “We did a nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “I didn’t like putting the ball on the ground (fumbles) as much as we did, and we’ll have to work more on ball security.”
Carlin led the Greene attack with 123 yards rushing, and his 41-yard scoring run gave Greene a two-TD lead in the opening quarter.
The points kept coming in the third quarter when lineman Chris Kehoe fell on a teammate’s fumble in the end zone to score his first career touchdown. Dan Dickman hit paydirt on a 17-yard run in the third quarter, and quarterback Joe Beckwith plunged in from one yard out in the fourth.
Four different Trojans had at least 60 yards rushing in the game with Dickman netting 75, Cerwinski 65, and backup Trevor Parrish finishing with 61. “Our linemen were coming off the ball tonight and opening big holes, and our backs were hitting those holes,” Paske said.
Greene plays at Oneonta this Friday.

Bainbridge-Guilford 31, Deposit-Hancock 0
HANCOCK – Bainbridge-Guilford improved to 3-0 on the season winning its second division game in as many weeks blanking Deposit-Hancock Friday night.
The Bobcats’ Billy Holden rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns. B-G took advantage of a bad punt snap on Deposit-Hancock’s opening possession, and had a short field to cover for its first score.
The rest of the way, B-G controlled the clock with time-consuming drives. For the most part, the Bobcats had little trouble with the wet weather and sloppy field. “Billy did an outstanding job hanging on to the ball, and so did Tyler Ouimet,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Three separate times, we were able to march down the field and chew up clock.”
Ouimet’s four-yard TD run in the second and follow-up two-point conversion lifted B-G to a 16-0 halftime lead.
Corbin Palmer had a two-yard TD keeper from the his quarterback spot in the third, and Holden completed the scoring on a nine-yard TD run in the fourth.
B-G held the Eagles to 58 yards rushing and just 84 yards of total offense in completing the team’s first shutout since the 2009 season when it blanked Livingston Manor. “I thought our offensive and defensive lines did good jobs, and our special teams were good,” Mattingly said. “It was probably our best defensive effort, and a good all-around game for us.”

Walton 32, Oxford 0
WALTON – Walton rushed for 285 yards keeping Oxford’s offense off the field much of the game in Saturday’s shutout victory.
Mike Beers scored three touchdowns for the Warriors (3-0), the number one ranked Class D team in the state. Beers had a 15-yard scoring run in the first quarter, and followed that with a four-yard TDrun as the Warriors led 16-0 at halftime. “They just beat us on time of possession, that’s what they do,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “We just need to do a better job on defense of bringing their guys down.”
Walton extended drives in the first half converting a pair of third-and-sixes. Each time, Walton quarterback Dalton Kaminsky was able to scramble for the necessary first-down yardage.
In the third stanza, Beers scooped up a fumble and raced 40 yards for Walton’s third score of the game. Reserve back Austin Kilmer had a three-yard TD run in the fourth. “I learned that we’ll play hard the whole game,” Dayton said. “I don’t know if the moment was too big, and we’re not there yet. I think we’re doing everything we can to get ourselves going in the right direction.”
The Blackhawks (2-2) play at Bainbridge-Guilford Friday.

Unatego 34, UV-Edmeston 13
OTEGO – Unatego returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and UV-Edmeston fumbled on its opening possession that preceded a 60-yard Tyler Butler TD pass as the Spartans put 14 points on the board in the game’s first two minutes.
Unatego pounced on five UV-E fumbles, and had one interception in the game. The Spartans raced to a 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, and led 28-0 by halftime. “We were down two touchdowns right off the bat, and that deflated (my team),” said UV-E coach Brian Banks. “We lost our first two games, and we could have won either one of those. We never had this game.”
UV-E’s offense showed signs of life in the third quarter when Justin Hofer hauled in a 38-yard TD pass from Brandon Miles, and Kody Homann scored on a short TD run cutting the margin to 28-13. Tanner Carley added a TD run in the fourth for Unatego, and he finished with 142 yards rushing. Butler threw for 158 yards.
Of UV-E’s five lost fumbles, one came on the Unatego one, and another at the Unatego five. “We had guys fumbling who just don’t drop the ball,” Banks said. “Mistakes definitely killed us. If we had been relatively mistake-free, this game could have been a shootout.”
The Storm (1-3) play a non-league game this Friday at Sherburne-Earlville.
