Blackhawks win third straight

Oxford 5, Sidney 0

OXFORD – Oxford erupted for four goals in the second half, and won its third straight game to even its record (3-3-1) on the season.

Clinging to a one-goal edge, Oxford senior Jacquelyn Heggie scored 4 1/2 minutes into the half, one of three Blackhawks goals over an eight-minute span. Heggie sandwiched two goals around an Emily Smith goal to turn a close game into a blowout. Heggie finished with a hat trick, and Smith added the other two goals.

“We were playing a little bit of kickball in the first half,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle. “We settled down and spread out a little more in the second half. We were beating their defenders and placing our shots well.”

Oxford hosts Unadilla Valley today.

Waterville 3, S-E 2

WATERVILLE – Waterville took advantage of the opportunities S-E gave it, and pulled out a one-goal win Wednesday night.

The Marauders’ Trevor Bays scored eight minutes in, but over the next 20 minutes, Waterville tallied all three of its goals. “We tried to go up the middle too much, and left some gaps,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “Waterville countered well and made us pay.”

Bays added his second goal in the second half, and S-E had two close-range scoring opportunities in the final three minutes that were just off the mark.
