The Grand Slambovians are coming to Oxford Saturday
OXFORD – On Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present The Grand Slambovians! Singled out as Hudson Valley Magazine’s “Band of the Year” for the past three years; on stage, Gandalf Murphy creates an enchanting atmosphere, using traditional folk instruments, tasty electric guitar and distinctive singing and songwriting.
The Grand Slambovians aka Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus of Dreams’ music has elements of Incredible String Band, Neil Young, The Band, Dylan, and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well. Upon returning recently from the U.K. this fall where they spread their contagious brand of quirky Americana from Glasgow to Penzance, the band completed work on their fourth studio album, “The Grand Slambovians.” The advent of “The Grand Slambovians” is both the band’s latest reincarnation and the title of their new soul stirring CD.
“These are great songs, captured in a chaotic, unstoppable and barely describable landslide of an album.” Acoustic Magazine June 2011
In 1998 The Circus emerged from the misty hills of Sleepy Hollow, and exploded upon the Hudson Valley music scene with their stunning self-produced debut release, “A Good Thief Tips His Hat.” The quirky quartet then began touring throughout the northeast and rapidly developed a fiercely loyal, all-ages following.
Lead singer and songwriter Joziah Longo (baritone singer, guitars, harmonica), is responsible for the band’s distinctive sound. He grew up playing traditional country, folk and mummers music with his father. Performing professionally from the age of 13 doing Dylan covers, he moved to New York to pursue his muse.
The following musical talents are the tasty ingredients that help to cook up the band’s artistic magic. Complementing Longo are his wife, Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, theremin); Sharkey McEwen (guitars, mandolin, backing vocals); and Tony Zuzulo (percussion).
Tickets are $22 (plus $2 service charge) until the day of the show; $25 at the door. Ticket price for students, under age 18, are always $2; please call to make a student reservation. Doors open one hour prior to show time. For further information, call 843-OTS6 (6876) or visit www.6onthesquare.org.
6 On The Square, Inc., a not-for-profit, volunteer-based, community music and arts venue, is located at 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford.
