Ex-Earlville mayor sentenced to state prison
NORWICH – Former Village of Earlville mayor Toni Campbell was sentenced Monday to one-and-a-half to four years in the New York State Correctional Facility for the theft of approximately $100,000 from her one-time employer, Sherburne-based Chenango Valley Pet Foods.
In July of 2010, Campbell was charged with third degree grand larceny, a felony, and accused of stealing more than $42,000 while using a company credit card for the purchase of gifts and other items. In addition, she was charged with first degree falsifying of business records, also a felony.
The thefts, however, were not related to Campbell’s position as mayor at the time, according to state police.
In April of this year, the ex-mayor pleaded guilty to the theft, agreeing to pay back the more than $133,000 in stolen funds. She admitted using her position as finance manager to steal approximately $100,000 from the Sherburne pet food manufacturer, purchasing a pick-up truck, ATV, cruise and airline tickets, and other items.
District Attorney Joseph McBride had originally asked for Campbell to serve two to six years in state prison, yet still agreed to the plea deal which will send her away for up to four years.
