OV bounces back, Unatego downs Storm ladies

Otselic Valley 2, Madison 0
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley bounced back from a shutout loss earlier this week blanking Madison for the second time this season.
Courtney Pittsley scored in the first half at 11:26 of the first half cleaning up a loose-ball scramble in front of the goal. A key insurance goal came with just under four minutes left in regulation as freshman Jordan Lidell tallied unassisted.
“I knew Madison would be a much-improved team the second time around, but we are playing better, too,” said OV coach Kevin Springer. “It was a heck of a battle, and I was glad we were able to get that second goal.”
Jessica Loomis made four saves for OV (5-3), who play at Morrisville-Eaton Saturday.

OTEGO – Midstate Athletic Conference front-runner, Unatego, solved Unadilla Valley’s defense in the second half scoring its two goals 2 1/2 minutes apart in Thursday’s win.
Katrina Clark scored with 26:05 left in the second half, and Sarah Mannina followed up at 23:26. Unatego outshot the Storm (6-4-2) 21-2 as UV goalie Jordan Anderson had a busy evening with 16 saves.
“Unatego really moves well to the ball and without the ball,” said UV coach Janelle Ross. “They pass really well and they’re quick. They are a tough team this year.”
The Storm play at Greene on Tuesday.

SHERBURNE – It was an improved performance for Sherburne-Earlville over its outing earlier this week against Clinton as the Marauders fell by just one goal to the state-ranked Emerald Knights Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Hamilton’s players poured on the aggression early in the second period, and Robbie Keever scored five minutes into the half for the only tally of the contest. “It was extremely competitive and a game of momentum swings,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “We wanted to put that game against Clinton behind us, and we knew that’s not who we are as a team. We had our opportunities to score, and against a team like Hamilton, you need to be able to capitalize. We just weren’t able to do that tonight.”
S-E (7-5-1) hosts Remsen today.

Field Hockey

Canastota 2, Sherburne-Earlville 0
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville, playing its third game in four days, finished the week with a win, a loss, and a tie after losing to Canastota Thursday.
The Raiders turned the tables on a 2-0 loss to Sherburne-Earlville earlier this season with Josie Sgarlotta and Kissandra Blaiser each finishing with one goal and one assists. S-E had numerous scoring opportunities that were just off the mark. “We played so well, we just weren’t getting the breaks tonight,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman.
The Marauders (5-6-1) host Hamilton on Tuesday.

PLYMOUTH – Norwich tucked away its 11th win in 14 matches this season as Ryan Hagen fired a season-low score at Canasawacta Country Club Thursday afternoon.
Playing the par-35 old nine (holes 1-5, 15-18), Hagen had a balanced round of three birdies, three pars, and three bogeys to finish at even par. His birdies came on the first, fifth, and 15th holes. Eric Walling was next for Norwich at 40, Corey Johnson shot 42, Rick Runyon 45, and Casey Marson 48.
The Tornado host Seton Catholic Central Wednesday in the next-to-last match of the regular season.

Girls’ Swimming

Oneonta 105, Greene 63
GREENE – Down several swimmers due to illness, Greene’s swimming team was outmanned by Oneonta Thursday night.
The Trojans picked up four victories with Jessie Brooks earning wins in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Chelsea Carlson grabbed a victory in the 100 free, and Jenny Yeager won the 500 free.
Oneonta expanded its advantage scooping up additional points in events where Greene was able to enter just one swimmer. “In the past when I had 30 swimmers, if someone was sick, I would just reload with another,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “That really affects things, but I did have some really good individual swims tonight, and the younger kids are stepping up. The gains this year will only help for the future.”
The Trojans are at Windsor next Wednesday.

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford dominated the opening game, and went on to take all three games from UV Thursday, 25-5, 25-16, 25-16,
Morgan Bullis had five aces, four assists, and seven kills to lead B-G (5-4).
UV’s Kelsey King finished with four aces and two kills.

Girls’ Tennis

Norwich 5, Owego 2
OWEGO – Norwich avenged is opening-match loss to Owego as it swept all four singles matches in Thursday’s STAC Central Division contest.
The Tornado dropped a 4-3 decision to the Indians last month, and in that contest, Katie Orioli and Alyssa Stagliano were starting at third and fourth singles for the first time. Orioli and Stagliano turned the tables on those opening defeats with each winning in straight sets.
Orioli won a back-and-forth battle over Kate Fisher needing a tiebreaker to win each set, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), wile Stagliano edged her opponent, 6-4, 7-5. “We were just struggling early in the season, I knew we would be better players later in the season,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We showed what we can do in singles, and it’s always nice to come back and beat a team you lost to.”
Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart captured straight sets wins at first and second singles, and the fifth Norwich team point came at first doubles with Jenny Borfitz and Breanna Cashman easing to a straight sets victory.
Norwich (5-4) is at Johnson City today.

 GREENE – Unadilla Valley, Oxford, and Delhi all met for a doubleheader Thursday night at Greene. UV defeated the Blackhawks in the opening match, while Delhi, under the lights, topped the Blackhawks in a nine-game pro set format.
Maggie Avolio of the Storm beat the Blackhawks’ Pachari Meade in the only match contested in singles. In doubles, Amanda Leach and Kiran Borst helped secure the UV win with a win over Emily Roach and Britni Rice.
At second doubles, Oxford’s Katelyn Smolcnop and Andrianna DeStefano went 2-for-2 winning against UV and Delhi.
