Coventry, Smithville kick off Fire Prevention Week

CHENANGO COUNTY – Oct. 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week, and while many of the county’s fire departments will celebrate with open houses following Columbus Day, the Coventry and Smithville departments will kick things off Sunday.

The Smithville Fire Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast and open house at 7 a.m. on Sunday at its new fire house, State Highway 41 in Smithville Flats, while the Coventry department’s open house will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the fire station, 109 North Road, Greene.

According to Coventry Fire Chief Daniel Clark, information on fire prevention will be available, firefighter demonstrations will be held and the department’s fire trucks will be on display.

Deputy Fire Coordinator Mike Beckwith said other fire department open houses across the county will include Oxford, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12; Norwich, 6 p.m. Oct. 13 and Earlville, 6 p.m. Oct. 12. Smyrna will hold its annual pancake breakfast and open house at 7 a.m. Oct. 22.
