Football roundup: Oxford rallies, S-E clinches playoff spot

Oxford 35, Harpursville 13
OXFORD – With the ground game contained by Harpursville, Oxford went to the air with great success.
Down by a pair of scores, Oxford scored 35 unanswered points to even its record at 3-3, and also keep its Section IV Class D playoff hopes alive. Junior quarterback Jody Smith threw four TD passes to junior wideout Andrew Golden. Smith threw for 234 yards, and Golden hauled in nine passes for 228 of those yards.
“We came out a little flat at the start, and lot of the credit goes to Harpursville for stopping our run game,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “I’ve said all year that we could throw the ball, and I guess we proved that.”
Harpursville’s Mason Dean scored on a 27-yard run in the first quarter, and Dean’s 79-yard TD pass to Luke Johnson upped the lead to 13 early in the second quarter.
The Blackhawks bounced back with a Smith to Golden 20-yard scoring toss. On the ensuing kickoff, Golden lined his boot off a Harpursville player. The loose ball was recovered by Oxford, who proceeded toward a second score. Golden hauled in a 26-yard TD reception, and Golden tacked on the extra point to tie the game at 13-13 at halftime.
“One thing John Curtis (former Oxford coach) used to talk about was to just give your guy a chance to catch the ball,” Dayton said. “Sometimes, that is just throwing the ball up there and letting your receiver make a play. Harpursville was selling out to stop our run and playing the outside (receivers) one-on-one. We think we can win those battles, and we did.”
Oxford poured on the offense with two more scores in the third – a 29-yard TD reception by Golden, and Paul Wonka’s three-yard TD run.
Wonka finished with 100 yards rushing on 29 carries, and it was clear the attention paid toward him allowed Smith and Golden to flourish. Golden’s 57-yard TD reception in the fourth capped the scoring.
“Down 13 points, the kids really stepped up,” Dayton said. “They kept fighting and believed things would turn our way.”

S-E 14, Sauquoit Valley 0
SAUQUOIT – Friday night, Oct. 7 will be a date Sherburne-Earlville fans will remember. The Marauders clinched their first postseason berth since rejoining Section III, and will play for a division title next weekend after posting its second shutout win of the season.
Austin Jasper scored on a four-yard TD run in the opening quarter, and senior quarterback Randy Briggs hit Cole Hodges on a 24-yard TD pass in the fourth to pad the advantage. If not for some ill-timed penalties in the first half that took away big plays, the final advantage may have been three or four touchdowns, said S-E coach, Mike Jasper. “We just killed ourselves with penalties in the first half, and we’ll have to clean those up now that we only have the good teams left on our schedule,” Jasper said. “We had a talk at halftime, and in the second half we came out and played almost mistake-free.”
Sherburne-Earlville had four interceptions in the game, and Hodges’ 24-yard interception return to the SV four set up Jasper’s TD run. Felix Rodriguez picked off two passes, while Matt Smith had one interception and one fumble recovery.
S-E drove 79 yards for its second score hammering the SV defense with inside runs by Cory Musician and Austin Jasper. Musician had a team-high 95 yards rushing, and S-E finished with 269 yards rushing. Defensively, S-E’s defense allowed just two drives inside its 35, and the host club never had a whiff of the goal line. “We controlled the clock most of the second half, and we did what we needed to do to win,” Jasper said.
The Marauders (5-1), winners of five straight, host Canastota on Friday.

Greene 47, UV-Edmeston 0
GREENE – Greene won its sixth straight game to start the season, and clinched at least a tie for the Section IV Division V title blanking UV-Edmeston on Friday night.
The win atoned for a loss to the Storm last year when the Trojans found themselves out of the playoff mix.
Keegan Cerwinski, Jeff Carlin, and Dan Treadwell all had two TD runs for Greene, who racked up 375 yards rushing against the UV-E defense. Cerwinski had scoring runs of 21 yards in the first and a one-yard plunge in the second that made it a 28-0 halftime lead.
Carlin, known this year for the long score, picked up six-pointers on a six-yard run in the second quarter, and a one-yarder in the third. Treadwell, a backup running back for Greene, made the most of his playing time. He scored on runs of four and 62 yards, and his 114 yards on four carries was second on the night behind Carlin’s 129.
On defense, Greene limited the prolific Storm offense to 60 yards of total offense.

Walton 44, Bainbridge-Guilford 15
WALTON – In a battle of unbeaten state-ranked teams, Walton took over the game with a 24-point second quarter to dispatch the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.
Mike Beers scored on four TD runs in the first half, and he added a fifth TD in the third quarter on his way to a 149-yard rushing day.
Walton scored 36 straight points as an answer to B-G’s opening touchdown. Quarterback Corbin Palmer threw a five-yard TD pass to Ryan Porter, and the successful extra point made it 7-0. B-G was unsuccessful with an onside kick on the next possession, and Walton capitalized from there.
Beers’ one-yard TD left his team a point short after one quarter, 7-6. Walton employed the short kickoff after each touchdown in the second quarter, and it regained possession more than once as the Bobcats struggled to handle the squibbed boots. B-G fumbled on its second possession of the game as well leading to Beers’ go-ahead touchdown of 24 yards. Beers added TD runs of six and one yards upped the halftime lead to 30-7.
Beers added a 17-yard TD run in the third quarter on a drive that was extended by a B-G roughing-the-punter penalty.
The Bobcats scored their second TD of the game on a Palmer two-yard keeper. Palmer was 9-of-16 passing for 61 yards and one TD in the loss. Billy Holden led B-G’s rushers with 92 yards on 17 totes.
“The time of possession and number of offensive plays they had versus what we had was huge,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “They just handled us at the line of scrimmage, and they were quick and physical. That second quarter kind of buried us.”
