Law library space still contested

NORWICH – Chenango County taxpayers should no longer have to pay $60,000 annually to lease space for a law library when the materials are available online, say supervisors.

The county currently leases space for the David L. Follett Supreme Court Library as required by the New York State Office of Court Administration. But with the district attorney and public defender’s offices – and even the county’s attorney – all researching online instead, members of the county board say it’s time for everyone to embrace technology.

At this month’s Chenango County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, Supervisor Jerry Kreiner, R-Plymouth, pulled the annual resolution that authorizes the leasing agreement and asked to know the outcome of last year’s investigation of alternatives. In looking to contain costs, the board has already petitioned New York State, the Legislature and Office of Court Administration to accept responsibility for providing the space.
