Greene's Driscoll reaches scoring milestone

SIDNEY – Greene senior Alex Driscoll reaching a scoring milestone Thursday afternoon at Sidney. Driscoll scored the game’s only goal in the second half, his 26th of the season and 100th overall in his five-year varsity career.
“It was a typical Alex Driscoll goal, and he made another nice connection with Alex Leone,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Sidney was packing the box with eight or nine players, but Alex was able to find that one seam.”
After getting a pass from Leone, Driscoll beat the Sidney goalie one-on-one from eight yards out. Driscoll is now one goal shy of the school record for goals set by Jordan McMullen in 1999.
The Trojans (12-2) play at Oxford Saturday.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Madison rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit to edge the Vikings on Thursday afternoon.
Brent Rasmussen scored twice in the first half, and he assisted Hunter Grace to give OV the two-goal lead at the break.
Michael Best scored once in each half for Madison to lead his team’s comeback. “The second half was a completely different game,” said OV coach Justin Barlow. “Madison came out strong and scored on some counter attacks. We had numerous chances in front of the goal, and all were mishit or went wide. Our passing was good at times and at times the game resembled long serves from one end to the other.”

NORWICH – Susquehanna Valley showed off its finishing ability under the lights at Norwich High School Thursday night in a shutout victory.
Travis Graham scored twice for the Sabers, one goal a nifty left-footer late in the first half that upped SV’s lead to 4-0.
“They moved well without the ball, and we spent a little time watching it instead of marking it,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime. “They definitely capitalized on the mistakes that we made.”
Norwich hosts Owego today at 4 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

Greene 10, Delhi 1
DELHI – Greene sophomore Paige Wilcox had the most prolific scoring night of her varsity career Thursday afternoon at Delhi.
Wilcox tallied a half-dozen times bringing her total to 35 on the season in the Trojans’ rout of the Bulldogs. “Everyone is stepping up and sending (Paige) nice passes,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “And sometimes she gets the ball and just goes around everyone and finishes. She has that capability, but others are giving her some nice passes.”
Shannon Gregory had a big day as well for Greene (10-4-1) scoring two goals and doling out two assists. Hope Beardsley and Gabby Sherwood added to the Greene scoring column.
The Trojans play at Oxford Saturday.

Unatego 4, Oxford 3
OXFORD – Unatego connected on a penalty kick with 30 seconds left in regulation to quash Oxford’s stirring comeback effort Thursday afternoon.
The Blackhawks, who lost to the Spartans 6-0 earlier this season, made up a two-goal deficit in the final 10 minutes of play. Emily Smith scored on a direct kick at 9:02, and just over three minutes later, Oxford’s Jacquelyn Heggie drilled in her own direct kick to knot the game.
Unatego pushed the ball into Oxford’s 18-yard box in the final minute, and a Spartans player was taken down inadvertently from behind to draw the penalty kick. Sarah Mannina put the free kick away with 30 seconds left, her third tally of the game. “It was a heartbreaker, but I was proud of the way our team kept playing and didn’t hang their heads,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle. “We were closer to them at halftime than the first time we played, and saw that we could play with them. We knew we were down a player, and they had to step up. I hope this gives us the motivation to play better in our last two league games.”
Unatego led 2-0 at the half before Oxford’s Gabrielle Cozzitorto scored her team’s first goal. The Blackhawks host Greene Saturday at 11 a.m.

HARPURSVILLE – Oxford dropped its third game in as many days against powerhouse Harpursville Thursday.
Five different Hornets scored goals, and the host team totaled 19 shots and 26 penalty corners. “After three games in a row, you could tell it was a struggle for us,” said Oxford coach Crystal Aukema, “but they really held up and kept trying.”
Oxford plays at Windsor Monday.

GREENE – Greene improved its record to 11-0 this season winning its first-round game in the Barrows/Bromley Tournament. A complete box score was not available at press time. The Trojans will play either Marathon or Maine-Endwell in the finals Saturday.

Golf

Norwich 200, Chenango Valley 202
GREENE – At Genegantslet Golf Club Thursday, Norwich became just the second team under head coach Bob Branham to reach 13 wins in a season beating a hot Chenango Valley team over the par-35 front nine.
CV entered the match with seven wins in its last eight matches. “To reach 13 wins, it’s been a pretty special year for this group,” Branham said.
Ryan Hagen, who recently clinched a Section IV medalist tournament spot, led Norwich for the third straight match shooting a two-over-par 37 to share overall medalist honors with CV’s Mark Gryskevicz. Eric Walling and Corey Johnson fashioned 39s for NHS, Rick Runyon shot a 42, and Casey Marson carded a 43.
Norwich (13-3) plays in the STAC Championships Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Ithaca Country Club.

OXFORD – In a matchup of two of the better volleyball teams in the Midstate Athletic Conference, Greene preserved its unbeaten record defeating the Blackhawks in five games Thursday, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-21.
Marissa Pierce had a career-best 31 kills for Greene (10-0) and Jill McDaniels chimed in with 16 assists.
Cathryn Mercurio kept the ball alive on the Oxford side piling up a career-high 24 digs. Teresa Ivarson added 20 digs to go with nine aces, and Nicole Head had 10 kills. Kera Shepler provided balance to the Oxford lineup with eight kills, four assists, and six stuff blocks. Oxford’s record dipped to 6-3.

NORWICH – Norwich bounced back after losing the opening game to defeat Chenango Forks in four games Thursday, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 26-24.
Jaime Berger had eight assists, five kills, and nine digs for the Tornado; Taylor Cook had seven aces, nine kills, five blocks, and seven digs; and Katie Callahan had a team-high 11 digs to go with five assists.
“Both teams were fairly even, but we were able to raise our level of play tonight,” said Norwich coach Shelly Alger.
The win improved Norwich’s record to 3-7.

Afton sophomore Payton Cutting served two aces and picked up four kills. Afton’s record dropped to 0-9.
