County seeks extension for emergency relief

NORWICH – The Chenango County Board of Supervisors has requested an extension to June 1 for emergency relief efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Lee.
So far, public assistance claims for road and bridge repairs needed in the county and for emergency management response efforts have climbed to $7 million, officials say. Individual assistance claims are nearly half a million dollars.
State and federal disaster relief organizations declared a state of emergency in Chenango and surrounding counties on Sept. 8. County lawmakers say the extent of damage to private property and to streams in several municipalities requires more time than allowed under the original deadline.
Chenango County Emergency Management Director Matt Beckwith said his office had been in contact with 1,399 individuals, 272 business owners, eight school districts and 38 police and fire departments in the county to help assess and register claims. Federal Emergency Management Agency mobile units are being called into Norwich, Greene, Oxford and Sherburne this month to provide additional assistance to victims of Lee. Of the 687 applications for disaster recovery assistance, Beckwith said his office had submitted 83 to FEMA.
