S-E blanked by Canastota
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville didn’t have a lot of opportunities to score, but the few times that it did slipped through the Marauders’ hands.
Canastota intercepted S-E quarterback Matt Smith’s pass at the 20-yard line ending the Marauders’ last-minute threat, and preserve a 6-0 Raiders shutout win Friday night at rain-soaked Marauder Stadium
The Raiders’ victory pulled it into a tie for first with the Marauders in Section III’s Class C South Division, and combined with Mount Markham’s win this past weekend, created a three-way tie atop the division. “To be deadpan honest, I’m not sure,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper* immediately after the game when asked about his team’s playoff standing. “I know it goes to some crazy tiebreaker system, but we’re not really worried about that. Whatever happens, happens. We know we have at least two more games left to play.”
The Marauders advanced inside the Canastota 30 just twice the entire game. The first time was at the end of the first quarter when a bad Canastota punt snap gave S-E the ball at 15. Four running plays netted just six yards to end that drive.
Late in the game, S-E junior Devven Ferris shot up the middle and blocked a punt putting the Marauders at the Canastota 29 with 2:07 left in the fourth. The drive started promising enough when Cory Musician gained five yards up the middle; however, Austin Jasper was thrown for a six-yard loss on a sweep left forcing the Marauders into a passing situation. Smith entered the game as part of the Marauders’ spread offense, but never got untracked.
“We certainly had our chances, we just didn’t capitalize on them,” Jasper said. “I think their defensive line did a good job against our offensive line.”
Canastota had several long drives that chewed up plenty of time off the clock, but the lone scoring drive came on a Marauders miscue to start the second half. With Canastota kicking off, the kicker hit a low drive that bounded off an S-E player just 10 yards down the field. Canastota’s players swarmed to the loose ball recovering at the S-E 47. Zach Zupan ran for 16 yards on the first play of the drive and added an 11-yard first-down run. On the sixth play of the excursion, Zupan plowed over from one yard out. Zupan finished with 158 yards on 33 carries, and James Mason carried 15 times for 65 yards before leaving in the third quarter due to injury. The Raiders held a whopping 30:25-17:35 advantage in time of possession, and easily won the total yardage battle, 252-88.
“We came out in the second half, and we knew they wanted to squib-kick the ball,” Jasper said. “We mishandled it, and then we didn’t buckle down on defense. We let them drive the ball too many times and chew up clock when we needed to make stops. The field conditions were wet and slick, and they were able to drive the ball when they needed to.”
Sherburne-Earlville intercepted two passes in the first half to go with Canastota’s botched punt snap. Neither turnover paid off for S-E, who failed to gain a first down in the opening two quarters. Cory Musician ran for a team-high 49 yards, and better than half of those came on a run early in the fourth quarter. “I think they knew Ferris was a threat outside, and they shut down that part of our game,” Jasper said. “They even closed down the inside a little bit. We had a couple good runs, but the one by Austin (Jasper) cost us.”
The Marauders’ Jasper broke off a 44-yard run on the same drive that Musician gained 25 yards. Jasper’s tote on an option pitch from quarterback Randy Briggs would have positioned S-E inside the Canastota 20. The play was called back, though, due to holding. “It’s a shame that penalties and officials get involved and cost you, but you have to be disciplined,” Jasper said. “It wasn’t the play of the game, but it certainly didn’t help us. The simple things have cost us all year, and that’s the sign of a young team.”
*Editor’s note: Based on the tie-breaking system, it was determined Sunday afternoon that S-E did not qualify for the Section III playoffs. Mount Markham won the three-way division tiebreaker over S-E and Canastota. The second-place tiebreaker was head-to-head play, and the Raiders gained the nod based on their win Friday.
