Book lovers share their passion for literature in Guernsey club
NORWICH – The Guernsey Library Book Lovers’ Club extends a welcome invitation to anyone interested in recreational reading and open book discussions.
The book club is in full swing, engaging readers and looking to attract new members. Local author and book club coordinator Cathy Robinson – along with library director Sarah Wiggins – are actively involved in the book club and hope to see the organization attract new faces in the coming months.
“We’re always open to new members. Everyone brings their own life experiences with them which adds to the discussion,” said Robinson.
When established in January, Robinson said the book club was a success from the beginning. She and Wiggins outlined the organization’s goals and the best way to attract new members.
“We discussed how we could market each book,” Robinson said. “We had a successful first meeting and many of those members are still returning six months later.”
The club currently draws nearly a dozen active participants who share their thoughts on selected readings at every meeting. Though the ideas of each member differ, all are encouraged to speak their mind and offer their perspective on applicable issues. According to Robinson, discussion is continually encouraged among participants despite their differences in opinion.
“Some of the books we read are very controversial,” Robinson said, adding that even controversial discussions are exciting.
The organization’s mission is to encourage reading and have readers gain insights that pertain to each novel. Everyone gets something different from each book, explained Robinson.
“When we pick a book to read, we’re really looking for the messages and for it to say something meaningful,” she said.
Robinson added that not all members of the book club are actively involved in the discussions but people who sit and listen still greatly benefit.
“Some come even if they didn’t read the book, just to hear the discussion.”
The Book Lovers’ Club is always looking to expand but its present success has given the club an opportunity to continue meeting. With an initial contract established to last to the end of October and renewal pending on the club’s success, the club maintains enough public interest for Guernsey Library to have renewed the club’s contract last week.
Robinson is currently seeking local authors to invite to upcoming meetings and over time, she hopes to involve more nationally recognized authors in an effort to boost promotion for the club.
The Guernsey Library Book Lovers’ Club meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Guernsey Memorial Library, 3 Court St. For meeting times and more about the Book Lovers’ Club, information is available at Guernsey Memorial Library or by call 334-4034.
