Sherburne-Earlville school board president resigns

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville Schools Board of Education President Douglas F. Shattuck unexpectedly tendered his resignation Monday night after serving the district for nine years.
Members of the board reacted with shock and surprise at the unforeseen development, and later gave Shattuck a standing ovation.
The long term public servant cited recent challenges in his personal life.
Shattuck said he chose to run for the school district’s board for three reasons: His belief that school boards need representation from local business owners; that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed; and the future for all depends on quality, fair and successful public education.
“... in spite of some negatives, I have been very satisfied to have tried to serve this community and our students as a member of this school board,” he read from a prepared statement. “The satisfaction as you witness the talents and successes of our students easily overshadow the frustrations and stresses of this position.”
Vice President Dr. Thomas Morris asked for a short recess after the announcement and before resuming the business before the board.
