Heading Due North plans self-defense classes

NORWICH – The public is welcome to join as David Francis, local business owner of Heading Due North Guns and Ammo Shop, offers community education and self-defense courses this fall.
Francis will be instructing two classes. The first class, titled ‘Refuse to be a Victim,’ will meet from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 19 and is open to anyone who wants to learn personal safety strategies. Francis’ second class will meet 1 to 5 p.m. on the same day at the Episcopal Church, open to anyone 18 or older who wishes to learn the basics and proper use of pepper spray.
“These are great courses,” said Francis. “The goal is simply not to be a victim. They teach you how to prepare and to protect yourself from a distance ... It’s another tool for the average person to not get hurt.”
Francis, who has owned his shop for three years and offered gun use and safety education courses for two, said he has never offered non-firearm training courses before. He has been preparing for the classes since spring and is excited to teach something new to the community. His goal, he said, is to train others to avoid conflicts before confronting them.
“I believe a lot of things we do are really unique,” Francis said. He urges people to attend and he stressed the need for proper training and community education in self-defense.
Francis supports the cause for both his classes, but he said he understands why people tend to shy away from pepper spray training.
“One of the myths of the pepper spray training is that you have to be pepper sprayed. That’s not true,” said Francis. “No pepper spray will be used in the course.” He added that anyone who considers carrying pepper spray is strongly encouraged to attend and learn 10 steps for correctly using the substance.
Heading Due North customer Aaron Winsor, who has previously participated in similar defense training courses, agreed with Francis.
“It’s a great course, good to carry. It teaches people to be safe,” said Winsor. “It’s easy for someone to take advantage,” he said. Winsor, who is also familiar with firearm training, said he believe that times are dangerous and people who recognize this danger are at an advantage.
“With the way things are getting around here, it’s good to have the knowledge,” said Winsor.
The fee for ‘Refuse to be a Victim’ is $35 and the pepper spray training will be $65. While there is no limit to the number of participants in ‘Refuse to be a Victim,’ Francis will not take more than 20 participants for the pepper spray training.
