Gas drilling top concern for New Berlin council candidate
NEW BERLIN – Following the death of councilman Halys Davis in the Town of New Berlin, two candidates have decided to run for the final two years of her term: Kim Felter Canarelli and Paul Thomsen.
Canarelli is currently pursuing her bachelors degree in political science at SUNY Oneonta and has lived in New Berlin for over 14 years. Canarelli said that although she has never held political office before, she will focus all of her energy on fulfilling her duties.
Her main issue, she said, is to bring attention to the dangers of natural gas issue.
“I feel that the small towns and even the state are not prepared for the multiple levels that come with gas drilling,” she said. “It’s an issue that demands and warrants attention.”
Canarelli explained that the “multiple levels” included increased truck traffic, gas explosions, the destruction of historical land, the accessibility for emergency vehicles and a danger to communities’ water systems.
For that reason, Canarelli is running on an independent ticket called Keep Water Safe, and she hopes the issue will catch the attention of voters.
The biggest issue, explained Canarelli, is a lack of communication between the groups on either side of the fence. She said a lack of information on both sides led only to confrontation and kept a resolution out of reach.
“These groups won’t stop fighting ... they’re volatile,” she said. “Neither side is getting all the information they need to come to an agreement ... information needs to be properly deceminated.”
Canarelli said she acknowledged the economic benefits of gas drilling and the right of landowners to lease their property to whomever they wanted; however, she said that right does not take into consideration the possible effects on neighboring properties. She also explained that the health concerns could not be ignored.
“No one has proven gas drilling to be safe,” she said.
Canarelli said she is also concerned with the needs and concerns of local families. Being a mother herself, she explained, she understands the importance of a safe environment to raise a family.
Thomsen, who is also running on the Independence Party line, could not be reached for this article.
