$147,247 awarded to nonprofits in the region by Community Foundation
NORWICH – Fifteen nonprofit organizations in the region, including eleven in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties, received grants totaling $147,247 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York in the Foundation’s Fall 2011 competitive grant cycle and from Special Funds held at the Foundation. The grants, which were awarded through a volunteer panel and Board review process, will be used to fund flood relief and a variety of capital projects, operations and programs at the various organizations.
Community Fund grants for Chenango include:
Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES $10,000 toward support of a Service Learning Program in partnership with local non-profits (Multi-county)
Opportunities for Chenango $10,000 towards operating support for a financial literacy program for low-income families (Broome/Chenango)
Village Improvement Society of Gilbertsville $9,000 capital grant towards foundation repair and asbestos abatement at historic post office building (Otsego)
Special Fund grants include:
Norwich Youth Philanthropy Council $5,000 for re-granting to non-profits through an RFP process designed and implemented by Norwich High School students in collaboration with Chenango United Way (Chenango)
New York Council of Non Profits (NYCON) $10,000 towards capacity-building workshops and mini-grants for non-profits (Broome/Chenango/Delaware/Tioga)
A total of thirty proposals were submitted by area nonprofits in September and October 2011. Requests for funding totaled more than $301,000 for the $100,000 available from the Community Fund. The competitive proposals were reviewed by panels of community volunteers in a three-step process while special funds grants are initiated via an invitation process.
The Community Foundation for South Central New York, a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 and headquartered in Johnson City, encourages and facilitates personal and institutional philanthropy throughout the region by managing funds within the Foundation’s endowment that are established by donors to achieve specific charitable goals. From these funds, the Foundation has awarded over $5.7 million in grants to the area’s nonprofits to help address community concerns and improve the quality of life in the region.
