Cyclones ‘C’ team wins league title, heads to state tourney

WATERVILLE – The Cyclones “C” team downed Rome, 7-6, here Sunday to win the Tri-Valley League Championship.
The “C” team is 25-2 over the last three years, with two championships and a runner-up loss in overtime last year.
The Cyclones reached the Rome 15-, 8- and 3-yard lines in the first half behind the rushing of Zackary Mills and Drew Walsh, but couldn’t reach paydirt. Drew Walsh recovered the Cyclones second half kick-off to the Colts, and then the Cyclones mounted a drive of 50 yards, with Walsh scoring on a 10-yard run, and adding the game-winning point after touchdown run.
The Colts were not done returning the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown, but missing the PAT.
The Cyclones have played stiff defense all year, giving up only one TD from scrimmage. Walsh, Mills, JT Vinal, Elijah Rodriguez, Alex McCann, and Tom Parrella led the always-tough Cyclone “D.”
The Cyclones are coached this year by Head Coach Tim Thompson, with assistance from Tim Hubbard, Lee Supensky, Dan Parrella and Randy Manwarren.
Mickey James, who began coaching the Cyclones in 1972, has served as the team’s defensive coordinator. James sustained serious injuries to both legs a week earlier in a home accident, but it came as no surprise that he was on the sideline, in a wheelchair, coaching the team.
The Cyclones will play in the Empire State Classic tourney. The first round to be in Rome at R.F.A. Stadium with the Cyclones playing on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Kirk Park of Syracuse.
