Oxford to observe National Suicide Survivors Day

OXFORD – National Survivors of Suicide Day will happen in 200 cities around the world Saturday, including a meeting at the United Methodist Church of Oxford.
The meeting will focus on discussions and connections and will include a national broadcast at noon by a panel of survivors who will recount their experiences and how they have coped with their loss.
According to Danielle Marshman, the local event coordinator, the day is “a good time to reach out to fellow survivors” and “gives a feeling of connection in a time when [many] feel so alone.”
“It makes you feel like you’re a part of a group that understands what you’re going through,” she said. “It is an emotional thing so people need time to prepare themselves for it.”
Marshman explained that she lost her father to suicide and that the first conference she attended “was the most healing thing for [her].”
The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and is strictly focused on those who have lost a loved one, friend, family member or co-worker to suicide, said Marshman. She explained that the focus is on what survivors have been through or will go through and that “it’s a time of togetherness.”
