Public hearing on county budget Tuesday

NORWICH – Taxpayers are invited to a public hearing of the draft 2012 Chenango County at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at the County Office Building in Norwich.
The proposal introduces a $84.65 million spending plan with less than a 1 percent increase (.06 percent) in appropriations over 2011 levels. It requires a $23.89 million tax levy and represents an average tax rate of $12.58 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The tentative tax rate is 29 cents less than it was in 2011.
Budgeters used nearly $4.7 million in reserve funds to afford government programs and services for this fiscal year. The 2012 application of surplus is $3.75 million, or about 21 percent less.
A vote on the proposed plan is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m. the following day, Nov. 30.
