Chenango County’s economy a 'bright, shining star'
NORWICH – New manufacturing jobs at Agro Farma, Raymond Corporation and Unison Industries have cut the county’s unemployment rate, falling from 8.0 in September to 7.5 percent in October.
The unemployment rate had been hovering between 8.5 to as much as 9 percent for the good part of 2011.
While employment tends to heat up approaching the holiday season, the hiring pattern in the non-farm and private sector is a little bit better than an historic pattern, said an economist with the New York State Department of Labor.
“Chenango County is a bright, shining star throughout the Southern Tier and a highlight throughout the state,” NYSDOL Senior Economist Christian Harris said this morning.
Chenango County’s manufacturers and a smattering of other companies, such as CWS and Frontier Communications, gained 600 new employees over the month and cut the ranks of the unemployed by 200, he said.
Data from other New York State counties indicate fewer unemployed but, at the same time, fewer employed workers. The unemployment rate might be an improved statistic, but doesn’t represent a true trend.
“We would rather see a gain in the employed ranks, like in Chenango County. It’s a true economy improvement, very promising,” said Harris.
Job seekers continue to file into the Chenango County Office of Employment and Training on O’Hara Drive in Norwich, said Director Gary Waffle. The office helps applicants with their resumes and interviewing skills.
Waffle said the employment office continues to receive new job orders, as well.
“We are still getting job orders in from Agro Farma, Inc. It seems to be continuous. CWS is currently doing a lot of hiring, and because of the holiday season, you have retailers who are looking for temporary or part time workers, such as Wal-Mart, Curtis Lumber and Lowe’s.
“We are awful lucky here I believe, with the hiring that’s going on currently and I hope the trend continues,” he said.
Commerce Chenango President Steve Craig said the labor rate this year reflects slow, but steady hiring across a number of sectors.
“We have seen a lot of activity from Frontier, which is in the hiring mode. And you can’t ignore the impact of Agro Farma; they are continually in the process of hiring.”
Unemployment statistics from the five surrounding counties are as follows: Otsego, 6.8 percent; Delaware, 7.6 percent; Madison, 6.8 percent; Broome, 7.4 percent; and Cortland, 7.1.
