Vets’ Home plans Christmas gift event for residents

OXFORD – The 6th District American Legion will be sponsoring a Christmas gift giveaway Saturday at the New York State Veterans’ Home.
Residents of the home will have a chance to choose two gifts from a variety of items donated by the Legion.
“It allows the residents to pick out their own gifts for family members or friends,” said Activities Director Allan Hopson. “It’s an all day opportunity.”
According to Chenango County Legion Commander Bruce Whitney, the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion participate year-round by raising money which is then used to buy the gifts.
“We have volunteers coming in from six or seven of the 10 counties in the district,” said Whitney. “We always have a great turnout ... members coming from as far away as Elmira.”
The district volunteers help residents choose gifts, wrap the presents and provide Christmas cards, Whitney explained. Gift wrapping stations are located throughout the common room.
Throughout the day, the Oxford American Legion will provide a lunch for volunteers who will be transported between the home and the Oxford post.
According to Hopson, past events have drawn as many as 100 volunteers.
“It’s a huge event that we’ve been doing for at least 30 years,” said Hopson. “It’s great because it’s all about vets helping vets.”
