Public hearing tonight on Agro Farma expansion deal
COLUMBUS – The Columbus Town Hall will host a public hearing at 6 tonight on a proposed property tax incentive for Agro Farma, makers of Chobani yogurt, as the company embarks on a $134 million expansion plan.
The Greek yogurt manufacturer, which currently employs 823 at its Town of Columbus main plant, is seeking a $3.8 million assistance package from the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency. The incentives include a sales tax exemption for construction materials and supplies for newly-built facilities. Agro Farma is also asking for a partial property tax exemption on the new facilities over a 10-year period, and an exemption on mortgage recording tax.
Following tonight’s public hearing, the IDA will meet tomorrow morning at 8 at The Eaton Center in Norwich to make a final determination on the proposal.
The company’s newest expansion plan includes a three-story 85,000 square foot and a one-story, 12,000 square foot addition to its current plant, a brand new 17,400 square foot “Wellness Building,” new receiving bays, boiler addition, raw milk storage and an expanded parking lot. Agro Farma expects adding another 100 jobs as a result of the expansion.
