Oxford addresses EMS concerns during bridge replacement

OXFORD – The Oxford Village Board addressed concerns regarding the Main Street bridge replacement project at Tuesday night’s meeting.
According to Mayor Terry Stark, the bridge will still be completed by next fall, despite questions regarding fire and ambulance response times.
“We should have everything set by the end of the week ... we won’t have serious delays,” said Stark.
Currently, the village’s fire and rescue vehicles, as well as both village ambulances, are situated on the east side of the bridge. With the Main Street bridge closed for at least a year, emergency vehicles would have to make a four-mile detour to reach the Rt. 220 bridge north of town.
Fire Chief Mike Cobb stated that an agreement has almost been reached with an undisclosed individual which would allow two fire and rescue vehicles, a tanker and a pump truck, to be located on the west side of the village, thereby reducing response time.
Also, it was resolved that one ambulance would reside at the wastewater treatment plant for easier access on the west side of the river.
“This will resolve the issue of response time ... I don’t believe we’re going to find any problems,” said Cobb.
Cobb went on to assure that all of the vehicles would be well protected in their new areas and a minimal amount of individuals, roughly 20, would have access to reduce the risk of theft or damage.
Additionally, Stark announced that the pedestrian bridge will be open within the week, allowing the continued access of both sides of the village to walkers.
In response to questions regarding the safety of the temporary bridge, Superintendent of Public Works Richard Paden stated: “They did a great job building it ... it’s laser aligned with 40 foot trusses; the structural integrity is over-safe.”
However, Paden did explain the need for a “walk-behind” snow plow during the winter due to the small size of the bridge. The board agreed that a plan would be in place by the end of the week in case of snow.
There will be a bridge discussion meeting at 10 a.m. on Dec. 14 to further discuss the construction project.
