Just in time for snow, city puts up a new weather station
NORWICH – While winter months are off to an unusually mild start, the city emergency management office hasn’t ignored the pending seasonal storms and is now prepared to alert residents of inclement weather with a new weather station atop of the Norwich Police Station.
For the last two weeks, the previous weather station has had trouble functioning, according to Emergency Management Officer A. Jones. While daytime hours weren’t troublesome, mechanical problems with the station’s solar panels caused it to malfunction when the sun went down.
“It was only working during daylight hours,” said Jones, who replaced the worn equipment on Sunday. “Our options were to refurbish or replace it.” Weighing the options, it was best to have it replaced, he explained. “If we sent it in for repair, it was going to be down for at least a month.”
This is the second time in the last year that the weather station has become unreliable, said Jones. Last fall, the station had similar problems but was easily repaired, temporarily sparing the emergency management office the hassle of replacing it. Now finishing its fifth year of use, replacing it was unavoidable, Jones said.
The old weather station will be replaced by another of the same model, costing the city nearly $600, but making the process of installing it a simple chore, said Jones. “It’s a decent one and we got a good deal on it,” he said. “The last one, we paid over $800, but it did last a while.”
Jones explained that the new weather station is comprised of two primary components: One for weather and the other to measure wind direction. Prior to the worn weather station, the city had a similar system but did not make information available to view online because of its more complicated design.
“It’s nice to have it back for reporting all the time ... It’s been a useful tool for us to have over the years and it’s nice to get information out to the public,” Jones said, adding that the original intent for the weather station was to aid city officials but putting the data online was popular among community members as well. “People are always looking for that information,” he said. “It’s good to take something that we do and provide it with the community.”
