Making sure 'every woman counts' in Chenango

NORWICH – Working as part of the Chenango Health Network, the “Every Woman in Chenango County Counts” campaign is continuing its mission of encouraging annual screenings for women throughout the area.
The organization has reason to celebrate its efforts as it has influenced hundreds to be examined and tended to the needs of nearly 40 women who have had cancer scares the past year, said program coordinator Lori Kemmerer.
Presently, more than 700 women are enrolled in the campaign. Through a steady stream of phone calls, Kemmerer will have contacted more than 800 women by the end of the year, reminding them to make an appointment to be checked. The campaign remains a vital source for breast, cervical and ovarian cancer outreach, she added.
As part of their outreach, the Every Woman Counts campaign also promotes free cancer screenings through the New York State Department of Health Cancer Services Program for women who are uninsured or underinsured. “This is such a great service ... and so many don’t know it’s available,” Kemmerer said.
In addition to the physical ailments of cancer, there is also the burden of transportation. With the nearest radiation treatment centers located in Cooperstown, Oneonta and Binghamton, fuel cost is a strain often overlooked, Kemmerer said.
“We are incredibly thankful for organizations like the Sherburne Wheelers for their support.” The ATV club has been helpful in the past by donating gas cards to treatment patients. Organizations like that are a crucial part of the campaign, said Kemmerer.
“Having my annual mammogram may have saved my life and it found my cancer when it was very small and treatable which improved my quality of life,” said Pamela Hernandez, cancer survivor since August, 2010. Regarding the campaign, “I think what they do is important and I hope they continue to get the funding they need,” she added.
Hernandez, along with cancer survivors Judy Ives, Bobbi Hoffman, Kathie Holt and Pam Pucci began the Circle of Hope Storytelling Group earlier this year; by teaming with the campaign, the group committed to cancer outreach, sharing their stories of trial and triumph with the community in hopes of inspiring others to be screened annually.
“All our stories are different,” Hernandez said. “We really try to get women to be more proactive.” Thus far, the group has had an influential role in fostering a network of support, she added.
“It’s amazing, the strength of some of these women,” said Kemmerer. “It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. The little things we can do might be able to save a life.”
