A tale of two halves for Oxford

Oxford 53, Delhi 31
OXFORD – It was a complete reversal of fortune – and momentum – Friday night at Oxford.
The Blackhawks fell behind by 10 points after one quarter, and found themselves trailing 27-19 at halftime. Delhi made five out of seven three-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field in the first half to grab the early thing. “We came out flat again, that has been one of our more consistent things,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We didn’t change defenses, but we came out and played the way we are capable. We were just all over them.”
Delhi scored just four points in the second half, and the eight-point lead turned into a 22-blowout win for Oxford. Caden Izard was 8-for-11 from the field to finish with a season-high 17 points, and Andrew Golden went 8-for-12 from the field to also scored 17 points. Justin Schray contributed an all-around floor game dealing out five assists to go with five steals, six rebounds, and seven points.
After a slow start, Oxford finished 23-for-44 from the field.

S-E 44, Adirondack 41
ADIRONDACK – Sherburne-Earlville combated Adirondack’s superior size and strength with quickness and tenacity to win a hard-fought road game on Friday night.
Sam Caton, outsized on the interior, put 15 points in the books with his ability to drive to the basket. Forward Cole Hodges, also fleet afoot, added 10. “They were a very physical team, but we took it to the rim strong and drew a lot of fouls,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We didn’t convert as many of those foul shot opportunities as we needed to.”
S-E was 10-for-27 from the foul line in the game, its worst effort of the season, and was 5-of-12 from the charity stripe in the last quarter. “Some nights, you just don’t shoot it well,” Vibbard said. “But we played really good defense. When you give up just 41 points, you’re going to win a lot of games.”

Unadilla Valley 62, Deposit 44
DEPOSIT – With leading scorer Justin Hofer slowed by a nagging injury, Unadilla Valley seniors, Brett Smith, and Brandon Miles, picked up the slack on the scoring end in Friday night’s road win.
Smith, coming off a two-point night against Walton, had a team-high 14 points, while Miles shrugged off a slow start to the season scoring a season-best 12. Jesse Ranger added nine points and Kurt Haycook eight to round out a balanced scoring lineup, and UV pulled away in the third outscoring the Lumberjacks, 14-3. “They were getting some easy baskets in transition against us in the first half, but we clamped down on defense in the third, and we continued to make shots,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “It was nice to see four guys (other than Hofer) score at least eight points. Everyone played and had a chance to contribute.”

Jeff Carlin scored 22 points for the Trojans, and Sam Adams had another double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards. Ryan Borst added 14 points.
“We just got off to a great start. We hit some threes and we had some fast-break points,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “They kind of made a game of it in the middle quarters, but it was nice to finish the way we did.”
Greene led by 11 entering the fourth quarter. Carlin had six in the last quarter and Adams four to extend the lead to nearly 20 points.
Brandon Davis added nine points and seven rebounds in his best all-around game this season.

Edmeston 52, G-MU 45
EDMESTON – Edmeston’s sharp-shooting from behind the three-point arc had G-MU on its heels early, and the Panthers finished the contest strong to deal the Raiders their first loss of the season.
G-MU’s early defensive focus was to contain the Panthers’ big men. Logan Vibbard and Tanner Ray each had two threes in the first quarter, and Thomas Parker added a trey leading the host club to a 19-7 lead after eight minutes.
“They have a nice club a lot more balance on offense than we anticipated,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “From the first period on, we were clawing back.”
G-MU made up the 12-point deficit, and tied the game briefly in the fourth quarter. Eddie Ray Cotton led the Raiders charge finishing with 25 points, but Vibbard settled his team down in the last stanza.
Vibbard scored nine of his team-high 23 points in the last quarter, and helped seal the win making five of six from the foul line. The Raiders had three starters foul out down the stretch leaving them woefully thin in the game’s final minutes. “The stuff we were worried about, foul trouble and depth, bit us against a team that is probably one of the two or three best in our league,” Hartman said. “I’m hoping for more determination, not frustration, as we head toward the holidays.”
G-MU hosts Franklin on Wednesday.

Jason Olin scored a season-high 15 points as OV was able to counter a hot-shooting Madison lineup.
“Neither team could really find the basket in the first half,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “In the second half, both teams were able to put points on the board, and Madison shot it well. We were just able to make enough plays to get the win.”

Norwich 63, Johnson City 22
JOHNSON CITY – Norwich’s defense held Johnson City without a field goal in the first half, and the swarm of purple and white defenders lifted Norwich to blowout win over the Wildcats Friday evening.
Norwich forced 23 first-half turnovers to grab a 38-5 lead at the break. Bryn Loomis and Hailey Dietrich led the Tornado defense with seven steals apiece. Loomis finished with 15 points and Dietrich 14. Sophomore reserve, Breanne Cashman, grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, while also handing out seven assists.
“We just really have a good understanding of what we are trying to do defensively,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We can switch in and out of things very easily and give teams a lot of different looks. That helps force more turnovers as they are trying to figure out what we’re in defensively.”

“We’re still doing the same things we did in our first game (a loss to B-G), but we’re getting better with our press, and we’re getting so many points on fast breaks,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “We definitely limited our turnovers tonight, and that was a big improvement over the Walton game.”

S-E 46, Adirondack 30
ADIRONDACK – Sherburne-Earlville’s defense zeroed in on Adirondack three-point threat Emily Lee holding her to eight points en route to a comfortable road win Friday night.
Lee had six three-pointers in her previous outing, but made just two threes against S-E and just eight points. Through three quarters, the Marauders limited Adirondack to just 16 points in building a 24-point lead.
“Before the game, we felt if we kept them in the 30s, we had a good shot of winning,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “They have some size, but we put a lot of pressure on their guards, and they weren’t able to get the ball inside.”
As for defending Lee: “We did a nice job getting out to her and made it tough night,” Mulligan said. “They came in with a 3-0 record, but our guards really made the difference tonight.”
Jordan VanAlthuis made a career-best four three-pointers – one in each quarter – and led S-E with 16 points. Mikayla Solloway and Cassie Beaver netted eight points apiece for the unbeaten Marauders (4-0).
