United Way at 91 percent of goal

NORWICH – As the end of the year creeps closer, so too does the annual United Way campaign and the organization is showing some uncertainty in meeting this year’s goals.

To date, the United Way has raised 91 percent ($402,577) of goal, more than $37,000 short. This year, the United Way is pushing to bring in $440,000 before the start of the new year to be distributed among local non-profit organizations.

Still, active supporters of the United Way are speaking words of encouragement among themselves and to the various charitable organizations that depend on funding from the campaign to continue valuable services. The charity has made great strides just since the beginning of the week, when it scarcely reached 85 percent of goal; the latest surge in donations has encouraged many campaign coordinators to continue seeking support, said Executive Director of the Chenango County United Way, Elizabeth Monaco.

“We are very concerned about this year’s campaign,” Monaco said earlier this week. “Most of the large campaigns have been submitted and we are just waiting for final individual and small business contributors to make their donations.”

Nearly $666,000 in funding requests were made to the United Way for programs this year, so even if the United Way ultimately reaches its goal, the funding of all inquiring programs is unlikely.
