United Way at 91 percent of goal

NORWICH – As the end of the year creeps closer, so too does the annual United Way campaign and the organization is showing some uncertainty in meeting this year’s goals.
To date, the United Way has raised 91 percent ($402,577) of goal, more than $37,000 short. This year, the United Way is pushing to bring in $440,000 before the start of the new year to be distributed among local non-profit organizations.
Still, active supporters of the United Way are speaking words of encouragement among themselves and to the various charitable organizations that depend on funding from the campaign to continue valuable services. The charity has made great strides just since the beginning of the week, when it scarcely reached 85 percent of goal; the latest surge in donations has encouraged many campaign coordinators to continue seeking support, said Executive Director of the Chenango County United Way, Elizabeth Monaco.
“We are very concerned about this year’s campaign,” Monaco said earlier this week. “Most of the large campaigns have been submitted and we are just waiting for final individual and small business contributors to make their donations.”
Nearly $666,000 in funding requests were made to the United Way for programs this year, so even if the United Way ultimately reaches its goal, the funding of all inquiring programs is unlikely.
Executive Director of Opportunities for Chenango Wayne Viera voiced his concern. “I think it speaks to what’s going on in the community,” he said. He said that larger donations may not be made because people have less to give this year than in previous years.
OFC is one of the largest beneficiaries of the United Way. “The United Way has been very supportive of the mission here; we hope to keep services going,” he said. “We have to be here for the community. If we need to find other ways to do that, we will.”
Despite the gloomy outlook of the campaign earlier in the week, the United Way surpassed the $400,000 mark on Wednesday amid fears of not reaching that amount by year’s end. Last year, $421,000 was raised and while the organization battles to help non-profits that face state and federal funding cuts again in the coming year, it’s vital to raise at least that much again, said Monaco.
“If we don’t get in more contributions soon, this will mean that we will only be able to fund about half of all our requests,” Monaco said. “These programs count on a successful United Way campaign each year to ensure that local programs and services continue despite other state and federal funding cuts.”
Donations will be accepted through 12 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30. Any contribution made thereafter will go toward the 2013 campaign. People who wish to donate can call the Chenango United Way at 334-8815 or visit the website, chenangouw.org.
