Norwich gets confidence boost with overtime win over Vestal

JOHNSON CITY – A stunning comeback in the final minute allowed Norwich to force overtime, and from there, the Tornado dominated Vestal in the extra period to win Wednesday’s contest in the Pete Hyde Coaches Versus Cancer Classic.
Norwich trailed the Golden Bears by five when Jennifer Borfitz dished to Hailey Dietrich for a layup paring the deficit to three. Following a defensive stop, Norwich set up for a two-point basket with the intent of immediately fouling Vestal after the made basket.
A loose ball was knocked out of bounds with 13 seconds left forcing Norwich to attempt a three-pointer for the tie. Bryn Loomis came off a double screen, and buried the tying three ball from a foot beyond the top of the key.
Early in the overtime session, Borfitz scored on a layup, and Loomis completed a three-point play to establish a five-point advantage. “We played Union-Endicott really tough the night before, and Vestal was no slouch tonight,” said Norwich coach Josh Borfitz. “I think this whole tournament was a big confidence boost for us.”
Loomis scored 18 points to lead Norwich, Borfitz tossed in 13, and Dietrich had nine. Norwich is idle until next Friday when it visits Windsor.

NEW BERLIN – Cazenovia advanced to the finals of the Unadilla Valley Tournament, and will play the Storm in the championship game at 6:15 p.m. tonight.
The Lakers hit 5-of-6 free throws in the overtime period, and Kaitlin Gerber added a single bucket.
Sherburne-Earlville had its second straight poor shooting performance from the perimeter, although senior forward Cassie Beaver continued her torrid play on the interior finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
“We did a good job defensively holding them in the 30s for four quarters, but offensively, we’re just in a shooting slump,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.

HARPURSVILLE – Harpursville’s offensive weapons were too much for Oxford, and the Hornets cruised to their own tournament title Wednesday.
Miranda Drummond had 23 points, Amanda Frayer scored 20, and Savannah Murray added 12 for the Hornets, who are the defending Midstate Athletic Conference and Section IV Class C champions.
Frayer scored nine in the first and seven more in the second quarter staking her club to a 36-22 lead. Oxford closed the gap to 41-31 with 5:13 left in the third quarter. After that, the Hornets finished the quarter on a 13-4 spurt. “They were too much for us offensively, and they have a lot of firepower,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “I was pretty pleased with the way we played offensively, but giving up 24 points in the first quarter was too much to overcome.”
Lacey Barry had 17 points for Oxford and Jacquelyn Heggie netted 13. Barry and Heggie were each named to the all-tournament team.

Payton Cutting scored 15 points, and Bailey Sherman tacked on 10 for the Crimson Knights, who established a 20-12 halftime lead. “We shoot lights-out in practice, but we’re struggling to score points in games,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Payton Cutting was tough for them inside. She was able to hit shots in the paint with her left hand or right hand.”

GREENE – Sidney avenged a double-digit loss to Greene from earlier this season getting a big second-half performance from Meridith Delello.
Delello had 13 of her 16 points in the second half, and she hit a key three-pointer with less than a minute to play that lifted the Warriors’ lead to five points. “They did a good job of setting screens to get (Delello) open,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We just did not defend well enough or rebound well enough tonight.”
Jessica Brooks scored 15 points to lead the Trojans, who play at Chenango Valley next Wednesday.
Tuesday, Greene’s offense slumped over the final three quarter quarters to fall to Chenango Forks.
The Trojans did not score over the final 5 1/2 minutes of the second quarter and did not put its first points on the board in the second half until three more minutes expired.
Michaela Transue scored 12 points for Forks in the victory.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley, troubled with foul difficulties from the first quarter, prevailed over Hancock Wednesday hitting 11 free throws in the final quarter to pull away.
Jordan Anderson and Taylor Davis went a combined 7-for-10 from the charity stripe to lead UV’s free throw shooters in the final stanza. “We were in a ton of foul trouble, and it was hard to get into a flow of anything,” said UV coach Brandi Backus.
Anderson scored a game-high 21 points and Davis had 13. Mikayla Fowler chipped in with nine points off the bench spelling starter Amanda Off, who sat prolonged periods of time with foul trouble. “(Mikayla) came of the bench against Hamilton, too, and played huge,” Backus said. “It’s nice to know we can count on her to pick up the slack when we need it.”
UV plays Cazenovia tonight at 6:15 p.m. in the tournament championship game.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley, troubled with foul difficulties from the first quarter, prevailed over Hancock Wednesday hitting 11 free throws in the final quarter to pull away.
Jordan Anderson and Taylor Davis went a combined 7-for-10 from the charity stripe to lead UV’s free throw shooters in the final stanza. “We were in a ton of foul trouble, and it was hard to get into a flow of anything,” said UV coach Brandi Backus.
Anderson scored a game-high 21 points and Davis had 13. Mikayla Fowler chipped in with nine points off the bench spelling starter Amanda Off, who sat prolonged periods of time with foul trouble. “(Mikayla) came of the bench against Hamilton, too, and played huge,” Backus said. “It’s nice to know we can count on her to pick up the slack when we need it.”
UV plays Cazenovia tonight at 6:15 p.m. in the tournament championship game.
