Marauders rally in fourth quarter to defeat UV

NEW BERLIN – Sherburne-Earlville made up an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit Wednesday night to reach the finals of the Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament.
Paul Romanenko had a season-high 16 points, and his three-pointer with two minutes to play gave the Marauders their first lead of the game, 57-55. S-E hit eight free throws in the last quarter to extend margin with Randy Briggs making 5 of 7 charity tosses in the last quarter.
UV had 20 points from Justin Hofer, and the Storm looked poised for a championship game appearance taking a nine-point lead after one quarter, and holding that margin until the final stanza. “Defensively, we played pretty well in the first half,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “They started to get the ball inside, and that’s where they had a definite advantage.”
Austin Jasper added 12 points for S-E and Sam Caton netted 11.
Brett Smith scored 12 for UV, who play Walton at 4:30 p.m today. S-E faces Oneonta in the finals at 7:45 p.m.

GREENE – Greene moved into the finals of its own tournament routing an outmanned Chenango Forks club on Tuesday.
Jeff Carlin had 15 points and Joe Beckwith 11 for the Trojans, who had everyone on the roster score. Greene head coach Rick Smith said his team compiled 16 total assists, 16 offensive rebounds, and 22 defensive rebounds. “It really was a team effort tonight,” Smith said. “Everyone worked hard the entire game. Chenango Forks is a young team and going through some hard times.”
Greene plays Unatego tonight at 7 p.m.

DOWNSVILLE ≠– G-MU raised is level of play significantly over a 24-hour period, and the damage it inflicted on Downsville in the first half allowed the Raiders to cruise to the Downsville tourney title.
“We were really sharp in the first half,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “We did everything well at both ends of the floor. Downsville was a quicker, more aggressive team than we saw the night before, and we had an answer for everything.”
DeMario Reed scored 17 points to lead G-MU, and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Greg Delaney rode a 13-point night to an all-tournament team selection, and Tim French added 10 points. Galen Wind chipped in with eight for the Raiders. “We shared the ball better tonight, and I was very happy about that,” Hartman said.

McGraw 63, Otselic Valley 42
DERUYTER – McGraw avenged an 11-point loss to OV from earlier this season jumping out to a 16-point halftime lead, and extending the lead in the second half to win the DeRuyter Tournament Wednesday.
Chance Wibble and Dylan Beaumont scored 16 points apiece for McGraw. “They played with a high level of intensity from the start, and we were playing catch-up the whole night,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We just couldn’t make a basket until the fourth quarter, and at that point, the game was already determined.”
Gideon Schena scored 15 points to lead OV, who host Madison on Jan. 4.

Windsor Tournament
WINDSOR – Buoyed by four wrestlers reaching the semifinals, Norwich is in third place with 47 1/2 points after the first day of the 22-team Windsor Christmas Tournament.
Tristan Rifanburg (120), Frank Garcia (132), Tanner Cummings (152), and Kegan Levesque (195) all won their quarterfinals matchups. Levesque had the easiest path to the semis pinning Jeff Klossner of Waverly in 37 seconds. Rifanburg needed just over four minutes to win by technical fall over Huntington’s Carlos Peireira; Garcia topped Huntington’s Kevin Mendez, 8-1; and Cummings beat Homer’s Eric Metzger by technical fall in six minutes.
Greene was just two points behind the Tornado in fourth place with Kyle Stanton (220), Keegan Cerwinski (182), Joel Roselle (170), and Mike Beckwith (160) advancing to the semifinals.
