Downtown bookstore to close after three decades

NORWICH – It’s been a favorite stop for downtown shoppers since it first opened in the summer of 1982. And for more than 20 years – as both an employee and its owner – First Edition’s Lisa Mody has dedicated countless hours of time and effort into the bookstore’s success. Now, however, after searching for a new owner to take over the 13 South Broad St. business for more than two years, Mody said she’s decided it’s time to move on.
Throughout January, Mody will sell off her remaining stock before closing shop for good at the end of the month.
“It seems like I’ve had the same conversation with hundreds of people,” said an emotional Mody of her decision to shut down the long-running bookstore. “I don’t think I ever realized how difficult it would be, but two years have gone by and I’m ready to move forward.”
Most difficult of all, she added, will be saying goodbye to the loyal customers who have made First Edition such a fundamental part of the downtown landscape, not to mention her involvement in annual community events such as the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival, the Pumpkin Festival and the Norwich Merchants Association’s summer sidewalk sales.
“That’s what I’ll miss the most,” she added.
Mody said she will continue to place special orders through the end of January and expects to spend some time in early February wrapping things up. In addition, she added she still hopes to find someone interested in buying the business.
“I would be elated to find a buyer,” said Mody. “More for my customers and the community than for myself ... I have a lot of customers who truly don’t want to see it go.”
In the end, she added, downtown Norwich simply will not be the same without the First Edition Book Store.
Any sale of the business prior to its closing would include the store’s entire inventory, said Mody, who added she’d be more than happy offer any assistance or advice in regards to business contacts and accounts. For more information call 334-6293.
