Oxford Garden Club brings holiday cheer to Bida Home
OXFORD – The Oxford Garden Club (OGC) brought 2011 to a close with their annual visit to the historic Bida Adult Home, the resident care facility at 4 Washington Park. It is characteristic of the Club to give selflessly and enjoy being social, as they do throughout the year, and this was no exception. The Garden Club spread joy, brought their enthusiasm and more.
Now in their thirteenth year of visiting the Bida Home, the OGC members request names of the residents along with their wish list. When the Club members visit, they come with platters of delicious cookies, and of course, arm-loads of beautifully wrapped presents.
Barbara Zeller commented, “So often the focus is on children at this time of year, but the adults need to be remembered too.”
OGC visiting members were Virginia Wierzbicki, Barbara Zeller, Anne Jackson, Dottie Hamstra, Jeanne Cline, Joy Coletta, and Jan Davis.
There were nineteen residents who asked for things like soft towels, slippers, pjs, and warm sweaters … and that’s exactly what they got! This year, as a surprise, packages, as well as an orange and a candy-cane, were delivered by Santa himself! Some of these young-at-heart seniors were very emotionally touched. The Garden Club ladies and residents socialized with punch and cookies then sang jolly carols before leaving, spreading lots of good cheer.
Earlier in the month, on Fort Hill Park, the Oxford Memorial Library was decked out with holiday finery for the season by many of the Garden Club’s artistic members. Work was made social as many members got together for the first time in a long while. This festive event always ends with a covered dish dinner and everyone in good holiday spirits.
The OGC members are looking forward to the New Year with many interesting plans and programs. Maybe this is the year you would like to become a member? Members of the OGC participate in Village beautification, the annual Perennial Plant Sale fund raiser in June, a scholarship award, help with the "Standard Flower Show" at the Chenango County Fair, go on occasional garden shows trips, share flower tips, get-togethers, and do some very rewarding volunteer work too. New members are always welcome! Meetings are held at 7 p.m., the third Tuesday of each month, at different homes on a rotating basis.
The Oxford Garden Club would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! To read more about the OGC visit www.oxfordny.com/community/groups/oxgarden.html. For questions or membership, contact Barbara Zeller at 639-4346 or email: sirfzig2@tds.net.
