New Berlin chief placed on probation

NEW BERLIN – New Berlin Fire Chief Shawn Patrick was placed on a 90-day probation following an executive meeting last Thursday.
Members of the Volunteer Fire Department Executive Board pronounced the 90 day probation following accusations from community members about Patrick’s conduct. Patrick is still acting fire chief, although a member of the board stated there would be “stipulations.”
Another fire officer will replace Patrick at executive board meetings although Patrick can still answer fire calls.
According to Mayor Terry Potter, the issue will remain in the hands of the executive board, who will make any final decisions. Issues may be addressed to the executive board at its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of each month.
Patrick declined to comment for this story.
He has been a New York State Certified Fire Fighter for 26 years; first in Edmeston and Pittsfield, serving the last seven in New Berlin as Assistant Chief for two years and the last five as Chief.
