Ambulance district coming up for a vote this month

NEW BERLIN – The Town of New Berlin will hold a vote this month to determine whether an ambulance district will be formed for the town.
“This has nothing to do with forming a not-for-profit or the Unadilla Valley ambulance service,” said Ross Iannello, supervisor.
Iannello went on to explain that the proposed tax district would only serve to create a new tax line in the budget specifically for EMS revenue and services “whether the ambulance comes from the village, CMT or Sherburne.”
He also stated that the separate tax line would potentially add more extensive oversight to the money allocated for EMS resources and give property owners a direct account of how much of their taxes are being used for that purpose.
Confusion about the tax revenue line has sprung primarily from the fact that another proposition was made simultaneously by an ambulance advisory board made up of citizens from the towns of New Berlin and Columbus.
The advisory board was created two years ago to determine the fate of the ambulance service that is currently being run by the Village of New Berlin. A not-for-profit company, which would be run by members of all three municipalities, was proposed and subsequently voted down by the village board in November.
Since that time, residents of the towns of New Berlin and Columbus have formed a board of directors for a new ambulance service that would run separately from the village.
Further adding to the confusion is the announcement that New Berlin Fire Chief Shawn Patrick has been placed on a 90-day probation. Patrick is still acting fire chief, although a member of the executive board stated there would be “stipulations.”
